I am starting to think I want to a master's ed degree and I'm hoping that I can find an online U, or executive degree program, that is accredited and marketable. Am I crazy to think I can get a decent Master's Degree online? Has anyone done this?

I need a drink. My brain is in overload.

I think you could likely find an accredited program at a local university or college that has a large number of online courses. You might get away with only taking two or three in person. An entirely online accredited education program? I'd contact the department of education in your state to get a good answer to that one, but frankly, I'm skeptical... I'd love to be wrong though!

Found this for aspiring administrators, but what do you want to do? Teach? If you want to teach, you definitely want to make a call to the DOE in the state you want to teach in...

I totally read this entire thread thinking Tare was Nexa. Then I was oddly amused and confused when Nexa answered herself. Now I think I need a drink.

I don't know really what I want to do; I suppose teaching appeals more to me than administrating. Mostly I want to make more money. :)

I kinda thought it would be tough to find an entire program online, and that's ok, but I worry about how online degrees are received more than anything else. Am I behind the times here? Has online degreeing become more acceptable in HR circles? WHO KNOWS IF YOU GUYS DON'T!?

My future brother in law has a PhD in Ed Leadership from some online university. He's a principal at a high school in his area.

My fiance is an elitist prick about the fact that he got it from an online university, and my fiance went to a traditional brick and mortar school. (He's also a theorist, and they're the ivory tower princesses of education anyway.)

Fact is, future brother in law has a job, and my fiance doesn't.

If you find a good one, let me know!

There is a program at work (unless it gets cut due to budget **** here shortly) that will pay for schooling 100% provided you maintain work and the degree pertains to your job. The difficult part would be doing that and maintaining the second job. I qualify next year at any rate, so I might go for a masters in something computery after hours.

I think there's still a bias against online degrees from online for-profit schools like University of Phoenix. However, there's been growth in online degrees from traditional universities which are considered largely as good as a standard degree from the same school. In fact, to use my example, the U of I online FAQ states that:
Quote:
A degree earned online from University of Illinois is not designated as "online" in any way. The degree is earned from the campus offering your program; Chicago, Springfield or Urbana-Champaign. The online programs offered are of the same high-quality, accredited education expected at the University of Illinois.

I am seeing a big shift to online classes over at NMSU, Most of the lectures and stuff are being typed up through WebCT/Salsa and the option is available in a lot of classes to simply study a chapter online, take a test online, and then print it out and bring it in the day of the test, and drop it off and go about your business. I have managed to not test on site for four periods of math doing this and I am only 6 weeks in. A lot of people think online classes are "easy" and as far as time constraints, and they are. However in things like reading (and having the will to read)lectures that would normally be spoken to you, it is much harder. It is, in all honesty, the exact same stuff that is taught on campus, you just have to "get it" and apply it on your own.

Definitely not in the private sector. Does UNC not have a mostly online program that would result in a "normal" degree? If your end goal is to be a highly compensated High School teacher...I got nuthin.

Mostly I want to make more money. :)

Buy South End real estate, purchase a few state congresspeople, have them pass friendly tax laws, rent the real estate out to suckers, when the value doubles in ten years, sell the real estate and buy an island.

Locally in San Antonio, the community colleges and Universities have online coursework but most require you to attend a live orientation class (unless you live over 100 miles away).

I do like the convenience of doing my History class whenever I want to (especially when you have a little one) however I have already experienced almost being dropped because my professor didn't understand how to work his spam filter.

The bonus to a live class is that you get out to meet new people and hear new ideas.

Jobwise, my husband alleges that some Federal jobs are picky about University accredation but I think in your situation that won't really matter. If you have the time, go for it. Just be sure to research the school to ensure you are getting a worthwhile education. I would be a little hesitant of Universities that are quick to offer large amounts of "life experience" credit. - I believe there is a Federal report floating around about what online schools to avoid (which were diploma mills)

I'm not even sure what the trolling is supposed to be here. Of course Tare would look to make sure it's accredited. Hence this thread.

#19REDACTED, Posted: Feb 19 2009 at 2:01 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) I need a sarcasm emote. No one in "true" academia is going to respect anyone who has an online degree. Of course if she's going into the public schools it's not like actual qualifications make a difference.

Well, again, an "online degree" is different from "online classes offered by an accredited university".

Some major colleges are offering online degrees. NAU, UofA, U Texas (They have some Masters degrees and Masters certificates) and WNMU. (The Forensic Researcher, GS13 at DHS ICE San Antonio, received his Masters online from WNMU)

I don't know of any professor or educated person that would look down their nose at a mother of two young children, seeking to further her learning and still have plenty of time for her family.

Whatever personal issue you have against the posters here, is irrelevant to the topic.

Good info and feedback, guys. I'm sure that I'll have to do a combined bricks and mortar/online degree but I want to be sure it'll be worth it...'cause I'm a lazy sh*te.

I can't believe I'm thinking about going back to school. *Koo-Koo*
