On Wednesday, the Atlanta Jounral-Constitution wrote:
The U.S. Navy seized seven suspected pirates in the Gulf of Aden on Wednesday after the Marshall Islands-flagged merchant ship Polaris sent a distress call saying gunmen had tried to board it from a skiff. The Bahrain-based 5th Fleet said the USS Vella Gulf raced to the scene and U.S. sailors captured the suspects, who were armed with AK-47s and RPGs. The alleged pirates will be handed over to Kenya, the Navy said.
Yesterday, the AP wrote:
For the second day in a row, the U.S. Navy has captured suspected pirates in the Gulf of Aden after a merchant ship sent a distress call.

The Navy says its guided missile cruiser USS Vella Gulf intercepted and caught nine suspected pirates Thursday after the crew of an Indian-flagged ship said it had been fired on and people were attempting to board their vessel.
Today, CNN wrote:
A Russian heavy missile cruiser stopped three pirate ships off the coast of Somalia, and detained 10 pirates, according to a statement released Friday by Russian Navy headquarters in Moscow.

The cruiser, Peter the Great, halted two small high-speed motor boats and a mid-size, support vessel on Thursday, the Russians said.

"Ten pirates have been detained. All of them are citizens of Somalia," the press release obtained by CNN stated.
[...]
The Russians said a Russian helicopter Ka-27, which took off from the cruiser, had located two small boats, which were moving toward an Iranian fishing vessel at high speed last Thursday.

When those in the boats spotted the helicopter overhead, the boats began slowing down, then veered off toward their support vessel, which was adrift nearby.

The helicopter crew could see pirates in the two motor boats throwing weapons into the sea, and kept chasing the boats until the Russian cruiser arrived in the area.
Apparently, the Dutch navy captured a handful of pirates back in January as well and just decided to extradite them to the Netherlands to stand trial there. The ones captured by the US Navy are being handed over to the courts in Kenya per some agreement.

I'm sure there's a thousand-million more where those came from but it was still nice to hear the stories come one after the other this week.

That's all well and good, but aren't they technically "Privateers"?

Nope. They're not working under the Somalian government.

That said, I'm planning on buying a rowboat and a deer rifle and hitting up Obama for a letter of marque to go pirate huntin'.

Thankfully there are still people crusading for Pirates.

Like the writer of this open letter to the Kansas school board complete with very informative graph a little ways down the page. =)

I highly doubt they're carrying around letters of marque and reprisal.

The use of Privateers was outlawed by the US and European nations in 1824(?)
To be a Privateer you have to have a letter of Marque and Reprisal from a government at war with the country of the ships you attack. Don't think Somalia is at war with India or Bahrain so they are Pirates pure and simple.

Just as an added note, Shantyman and songwriter Tom Lewis,http://www.tomlewis.net was on pirate patrol back in the 1960's on a Royal Navy ship.

Ok, but what I meant was that since Somalia has no government, they are arguably part of the governing process of their region. Especially since they pour their stolen money back into their own community. It's not officialy sanctionned by the government since there isn't one, but it's still sanctionned by the relevant people in Somalia, ie those with the biggest guns. It was a tortuous way of trying to reconcile anarchism and the legitimacy of the rule of the strongest with the flourishing of piracy in Somalia.

At least that's what I would've said if half the members of this board weren't part of the "Syndicate for the Proper Use and Grammar of All Things Piracy Related Yarr."

Tossers.

You are hereby sentenced to stoppage of grog you frog.

Oh and yes its going on because there is no force in Somalia willing to stop their share of the ransom money by ending the PIRATE attacks.
As long as the merchants dont hang a few at sea, or sink their ships to let them drown, its still a low risk high reward trade. On the USS CONSTELLATION historic ship museum I can at least invite pirates to have a dance with the crew. Only one dance per pirate however.

One of the younger crew was wondering if the Navy is still awarding prize money for captured ships. Put a few extra dollars in the hands of the sailors and marines aboard the VELLA GULF.

My mind picture had him out in his Alumacraft, protecting the waters of Lake Michigan.
