Seems we have an expert on WoW general forum who is getting a shiny new MS and thinks we don't respect his smarts enough. We shouldn't have all the fun, so: What gender do you play online??

Soup's on!

Edit: "What gender do you play online" was actually the subject line the researcher is using for the latest survey spam ... but the answers here have been more fun.

Gender? Gender is what gives inanimate objects an 'a' or 'o' ending in latinate languages.

If you mean 'sex', say 'sex'

If we wanted to shag, we'd say it. We mean gender.

Both are acceptable, at least on this side of the pond.

Hell, in the anthropology and sociology classes I've taken, they've always made it a point to use "gender". Which, upon reading, matches Samira's link:
Quote:
In some scholarly fields, “sex” is used to label biologically determined aspects of maleness and femaleness (reproduction, etc.) while “gender” refers to their socially determined aspects (behavior, attitudes, etc.)

I haven't had sex since 1950, and that was hours ago!

Can't help but think that assigning a word to socially defines aspects correlated with sex is anything but over-generalized twaddle. Are we really too busy to appreciate a person's societal traits on an individual basis?

Nope, some guy with yet another survey over in WoW general wants to know. Seems he thought he got a rough welcome and wants to play. I thought I'd share. Truly, I want to see him explain answers like "dragon" to his supervising prof. He did leave "other" as a gender option and asked for an explanation.

Prof: Dragon, does that count as a gender?
Student: Well, I'm not gonna try to lift the tail and check!
