Dear Americanites
I grew up in an England of Hollywood Movies where Sir Walter Raleigh had an American accent, Audie Murphy and the US military single-handedly won every war ever fought, and the only decent cartoons were voiced by Mel Blanc, but I never lost any sense of my Britishness.
I'm educated enough to know that I
would be speking ze cherman if it weren't for the thousands of Americans who came to our aid in WW2 and saved us from a **** invasion. I also know that the disproportionate economic success of our pretty little islands owes a great deal to the relationship between London & Washington.
Alas, over the last 8 years I came to be ashamed, and even disgusted at the blind support my Queen's Government gave to America's ill-conceived, unjust and internationally disastrous foreign policies. From 2003, when travelling around Europe I had to make it clear that I was British, and not American, to avoid ostracism and contempt. More recently, even being British conveyed guilt-by-association - Abu-Ghraib, Gitmo etc., caused rifts in muslim/non-muslim reltionships in Paris & Madrid and turned them from relative stability to strife and hatred.
Today I see a new page turned; it's blank and your new Commander in Chief has pencilled in the initial paragraph that makes me want to read on. I believe and hope that as the words are written in ink, the healing can begin.
As Gwyn said, you have elected a true statesman. He has yet to prove himself, and he is about to be tested with rigoUr and urgency.
Whilever the USA remains the world's leader, President Obama
(Oh it's nice to be able to type that) is almost as much my leader as yours. I hope with all my strength that he proves capable of impacting on my future and that of my family as (y)our last leader.
Whether you're Republican, Democrat or apathetic, your democracy has restored my faith in America's potential to make the world a better place.
Thank you.
Nobby
