I text once or twice a week on my German phone (when in Germany), I pretty much have unlimited minutes except to my friend's phone and foreign countries. If I bothered, I'd have unlimited texts over the Internet too, but I don't text enough to bother. By far.
In Britain, I texted a lot more, mainly because it was the cheapest way of communicating.

Cell phone and data plans are free in Germany?
Unlimited landline/O2 calls - €15/month
Unlimited mobile internet - €25/month
Landline number within 2km of my home - €5/month
Paying off my PDA - €10/month
Sums up to €55 per month, currently a bit more because my Skype isn't working and UK calls are 9¢/minute. And yeah, that's a good quarter of my monthly income, but it's pretty much the only bill I have to pay.
Plus, I can't get a landline or any other kind of Internet in this *********

Not to be a complete jackass but aren't you eating donated food and worrying about whether or not you'll be keeping your gov't assistance check and a roof over your head? Priorities. Get them!

I know, I know.
But the donated food, I'll get with any salary, as long as I live here, and quite honestly, I can get some quick cash if I really need it, just not a fUcking grand within a few days. Okay, granted, I only need to get €350 more now and it's all okay, but anyhow, I'm applying for any job in any country where I have a work permit and basic knowledge of the local language, so hopefully, all this will get settled soon, and guess what, I do my job search mainly with this phone. And write the drafts for stuff like CVs on it (lolOfficeMobile).

For today's standards, anyone 14 and over should have a cellphone. Of course, it doesn't need to be a working phone. Just make sure it works so s/he can call 911 if need be. :x

I text a lot. A lot. A LOT. And not just from my phone. I'll text to someone's phone from my email or their cell carrier's website, just depending on convenience. My family keeps in touch more with texts than anything. And it's a record of "See? I TOLD you we were meeting at 8 for the movie! Not 9!" We have unlimited texting on our family plan so it's not an issue.

On average, I probably send and receive about 200 texts a day.

If DF wasn't so busy today, I'm sure she could tell you about the time when her son sent something like 20,000 or more texts one month. QWERTY keyboard is her son's friend apparently.

Edit: My oldest kid has a phone that is part of our cell phone plan. We got him one when he started high school and had to take a bus to the next town. I was worried that he'd miss the bus or something and become stranded. We let him keep his phone when we moved back to San Diego, simply because his social life has become so active, and it's a very easy way to get a hold of him and find out what's going on.

Our middle son has a pre-paid cell phone that we only let him take with him when he goes out with his friends. He can't text with that phone. He's asked for it and we've told him that there's no reason why he should have texting when that phone is for phone calls strictly between him and his parents when he's out with his friends. Besides, he's only in middle school.

Our youngest, of course, doesn't have a cell phone. But she's already asking for one. We've told her no. Of course, she has her own means to pay for a cell phone, but I've told her until that happy day that she's an adult, she needs parental permission to get a cell phone and the answer is no. Unless her modeling/acting gigs kick into high gear, I won't get a cell phone dedicated just for her stuff.

My brother and I share a phone bill (different contracts, same address) so it totals how much we talk/text/whatever. This past month we sent a total of 759 texts.

I sent one.

That was my point; our cable connection is through Comcast. It's about as reliable as a meth addled teenager.

I guess we're just lucky. Everyone rags on Comcast, talking about how unreliable it is, and we rarely have issues with our cable. Both TV and internet are always up and running and running well. I think it's just you guys; urdoinitrong.

I'm using roadrunner. It seems to be fine. I like it.

Kahliva: when 1/4 of your money is going out on phone bills while you're struggling to keep a roof over your head and food in your belly it's time to reassess your spending. Looking for a job, I understand, but srsly 1/4 of your monthly income is nuts. You could stock up on a years supply of ramen noodles for that much.

You'll have to borrow a phone to call the scurvy hotline, though.

Katie, while I don't want to argue that spending so much money on my mobile is fully reasonable at the moment, please do understand that 1. I've never gone hungry, not even when all I got was €60/month, and 2. these rent issues were unforeseen.
The government has also proven that they really don't want me to spend my money on useful things; they tried to cut my benefits based on the suspicion that I might have spent part of them on my education last year.
Heck, I'll probably just start working* this weekend because I don't want to go through the trouble of getting a government loan.

*in a job I'd never ever consider as a long term solution

Keep in mind Kali that despite other folks judging you for taking benefits, you've paid in to them as well...if anyone gives you any grief just tell them you're only spending what you've paid in and then you'll get a job and that they're idiots for allowing themselves to be screwed ;)

To be honest here, I didn't. Over here, you get a minimal amount of benefits if you aren't eligible for anything else, and that's what I've lived off ever since I left the orphanage~thingy.

You've never bought anything taxed? Even so, you'll pay in more than you've taken out over the course of your lifetime most likely. You're still pretty young, yes?

Oh, of course I've bought taxed things, yes.
And technically, I've been out of school for 5 days now, and really want to stop being a leech.
I'm 20 currently.

Oh, and thanks for trying to make me feel good about myself, but if Katie really bothered me that much, I'd probably not be posting right now. Smiley: wink

I'm not going to rag on you for going to school or using govt money for going to school. I'm just pointing out that your priorities might need some rearranging seeing as how if you don't have the money to pay for books, food, rent, ect then you probably don't have the money for international flights, and international cell phone bills.

As I said, the rent issue was nothing I could have foreseen. I could have paid my rent without trouble from my savings, just not the deposit I wasn't informed about. I will probably just go ahead and use my savings plus however much I can earn the next few days because I don't want to bother to get a loan that I'd pay back as soon as possible anyhow.
And yes, I do have savings. And I also always make sure I have enough money to live. I do not have €630 "in case something comes up", and if I didn't have that expensive phone plan, I would've spent that money on doing stuff like job search in a cyber cafe.
Also, concerning the flight, I dug out a fUcking huge bamboo plant to be able pay for it. In the snow. Uphill. Both ways.
