When cell phones give me unlimited calling to anywhere in North America for $50-60 with the use of 3 headsets that cost a combined $80.00, I'll do just that.
You can get unlimited calling for evenings and weekends for less than that and let's be honest, how often does your landline get used mon-fri, 8-6?

Just as soon as we plug this in...

Really, I don't see what the harm is in expecting the kid to wait until they're 16 and working to have their own phone. Once he can buy his own prepaid minutes, he can go crazy with it. If the kid wants to slave over a fry vat for 30 hours a week and blow his paycheck on gluing his face to a phone, God bless 'im. Hell, let him find odd jobs or mow lawns or whatever for spare cash prior to 16 if it's that important to him.
Joph's a genius.

About 3-4 hours a day, that's before 5pm, all long distance.

We pay $25/month for cable phone. It covers calls to anywhere in the contiguous US. We buy an 800# for an extra $5/month for family and close friends to call us.

I've thought about eliminating the landline but I'm kept back by the fact that (a) I've never used a cell phone which was comfortable to use for extended periods of time, (b) I've never used a cell phone with the sound quality of a landline and (c) I've never experienced dropped calls and other wackiness with the landline.

Oh, and Comcast sucks enough as is without trusting our phone service over it so VOIP is out.

You don't see an issue with someone spending 3-4 hours on the phone every day and it's not work related?

Vonage. Smiley: wink

It's not the most reliable. Our cable seems to be the first thing to go in inclement whether, but husband and I both have to keep a cell for work, so it's no big deal.

I don't even say 3-4 hours worth of words in an entire day, on the phone or in person.

No, she has a big family and she's generally chatting it up while she's doing things around the house. Also, it means less talking I have to do when I get home from work. We have multiple handsets because she kills the batteries.

Broads love to talk.

I know, I don't get it either.

I text once or twice a week on my German phone (when in Germany), I pretty much have unlimited minutes except to my friend's phone and foreign countries. If I bothered, I'd have unlimited texts over the Internet too, but I don't text enough to bother. By far.
In Britain, I texted a lot more, mainly because it was the cheapest way of communicating.

Cell phone and data plans are free in Germany?

I prefer to text friends during the business day as I know they are busy and they will be able to respond when they can. I started texting at a time when my phone couldn't do e-mail, otherwise I probably would have done that instead. Now it's just habit and I prefer a more passive communication during the day so I don't bother anyone.

Get Vonage. We've used it for 2 years and never had an issue with it. $25 a month, unlimited local and long distance, all the features like call waiting, 3-way calling, voice mail, etc. The only downside is if the power goes out or cable goes out, no phone. But we really never had a problem with that either.

We are cell only, and since I got my iPhone with the data plan and work has allowed us to sync with the corporate Exchange server, it has become a much loved and viable work tool. I only wish I could some how deduct some of my expenses for taxes, no idea how I would prove that though Smiley: smile

My brother in law loves to blast text me via his PC, I ended up having to get the unlimited plan to cover that and the texting my wife does, and the few times when I text my other brother since that's the only way I get to talk to him.

That was my point; our cable connection is through Comcast. It's about as reliable as a meth addled teenager.

I've had a cellphone for about 2 years now and have never sent a single text message. Of course, all the people I know with cell phones I regularly talk to on Vent anyway, and the people I don't talk to on vent don't have cell phones.

I get my cell phone for free from work. Sadly, this means that most of the texts I get are automated screams for help from computers rather than people, and most of my texts are to/from people at work related to work (we used to have alpha pagers back in the day, so we see it as getting the ability to make voice calls for free!). I don't text much with friends/family. Never got the attraction. I think it's one of those things where when you're required to do it for work all the time, it's not "fun" anymore.

As to getting kids cell phones, it's obviously up to the parent, but most parents seem to view the cell phone as a way to keep tabs on their kids. Once they're old enough to be hanging out with friends, participating in after-school activities, etc, it's probably not a bad idea. You can get phones that just allow for calls to a limited set of addresses if you want. IMHO, it's kinda silly to trust your kid enough to be out with friends without adult supervision but *not* trust them with a cell phone. I'm going to go out on a limb and assume that the kid is worth more to you than the phone or any potential phone bill.

Who said it was about trust? Believe me, if he ran up a multi-hundred monthly bill on a bill I was responsible for due to him just not caring, I'd just take it from his savings, no questions or discussion about it. I said that if he wanted one, he could pay for it.

Cell phones are merely another instrument for a parent to introduce awkwardness into a budding adolescent's life. If I were a parent, I would give them one, and make it so that any call from me would be automatically picked up and put on speakerphone.

Even cheaper is the Magic Jack. $50 a year.
