So how much do you text?Follow

Silverado (CA) - Greg Hardesty's teenage daughter managed to send 14,528 text messages last month. When he received his 440 page AT&T wireless phone bill, he thought it was a mistake. The dad, age 45, said "First I laughed. I thought 'That's insane. That's impossible.' And I immediate whipped out the calculator to see if it was humanly possible." He found out that it was, but just barely.

Reina, his 13-yr old daughter, would've had to send text message at the rate of 484 per day, or one every two minutes of every waking hour. When the father asked "Who are you texting anyway? Your entire school?" She replied, "A lot of my friends have unlimited texting. I just text them pretty much all the time."

According to the report, she routinely messages a core group of "four obsessive texters," all girls between 12 and 13 years old on her LG phone. Reina managed to text one of her friends who was sitting right next to her at a karaoke party.

Hardesty's AT&T phone plan included unlimited texting for $30/month. If he would've had to pay standard AT&T rates the bill would've been a whopping $2,905.60 (at $0.20 per message).

According to Nielson studies, the average 13- to 17-yr old teen texts 1,742 messages per month. Hardesty admits that he texts around 900 messages per month (30 per day), which is about 700 more than his age group.

As a result of this last month's activity, and in an attempt to curtail her texting activity, Hardesty and his ex-wife have now told Reina she can no longer send text messages after dinner.

And I thought my 200 last month was bad.

0 text messages on normal days.
2 per day if I'm traveling to let the wife know everything is fine.
10 on Holidays to send to parents/friends, even less when I have access to a land line since I prefer to send out wishes in my own voice.

All of this on someone else's phone, since I'm one of that rare breed of **** sapiens that refuse to carry around a cell phone.

My kids won't be getting a cell phone before they turn 18 and are able to purchase it and pay the monthly fees themselves.

Edited to add: The first time I see them send out "u" or "b4" or "cuz", that phone is confiscated.

When I have a cellphone capable of it (read: not right now) I average about 150 a month, of which they're all to my better other half.

I hardly ever use my cell phone. I only have that godforsaken thing in case my car craps out or something.

But I did teach Nexa a thing or two about texting. =)

I send 5 or 10 a day, mostly to one person. She tops out at 15-20, but uses her blackberry to send e-mails, Blackberry messenger messages, & whatever else the blasted thing does.

Before her, it was 5-10 a week.

One a week, maybe, only in response to someone else. I'm not a big cell phone person.

I only text one friend of mine and that's because she's so busy, that seems to be the only way I can get a message to her. And it's rare that I do that. Texting seems pointless to me.

Since Tare taught me texting etiquette, I normally only text if 1. I'm replying to one, or 2. texting Smash while working since I work in a place where nosey people can hear what I'm saying if I just call.

I text once or twice a week on my German phone (when in Germany), I pretty much have unlimited minutes except to my friend's phone and foreign countries. If I bothered, I'd have unlimited texts over the Internet too, but I don't text enough to bother. By far.
In Britain, I texted a lot more, mainly because it was the cheapest way of communicating.

Unborn yet, we're still trying to get pregnant.

Those were my resolutions as the "good parent" I hope to become. I'm sure from now until I actually do have children, eventualities might change my mind, but until then, those are the ground rules.

Ok reality check, and this is coming from a Parent.

Bullsh*t rules like that won't last to the point your kids are old enough to be using a phone.

Children are not robots you can't just programme them and expect them to work as planned.

I plan on getting Hannah a cell phone before letting her go places with friends when she's older. I want her to always be able to call us if she gets separated from someone or even if she just wants to come home for whatever reason. I carry a cell phone now for the exclusive reason of wanting her care providers to *always* be able to reach me if they need to and her having a cell phone will be along the same lines. However, I'll likely have the phone programmed to only be able to call my home number, my cell, Smash's cell, her Dad, or the police until she's old enough to have a job and pay for a phone for "fun" on her own.

Probably 6 a day at most on days I actually text...

When/if I ever have a kid the only cell phone they're getting are one of those three button preset number ones that I think Nexa was talking about.

Less than before, since a lot of us have hooked into Twitter.

My plan is 10 cents a text.

I text zero times a month.

My kid will be getting a phone when he can hold a job to pay for it. Anyone who doubts me has no concept of the combination of parental stubbornness, Luddite mindset and plain laziness that'd prevent me from actually going out and buying him a cellphone & a plan.

I'm the sort who'd buy him a circa 1987 brick phone and say "Oh, honey, it's just as good as those phones your friends have..."

You should...and you if he complains, say, "what?! This was good enough for Michael Douglass! You think you're better than Michael Douglass!?"

I get 3-4 a week and that's because my friend's phone package includes unlimited texts and he's too cheap(read: a good Canadian) to pick up the phone to call me. I reply to those.

My cell phone is my main phone, our landline only for emergencies. Even then, I rarely text. If I do, it's usually if someone texts me first, usually a friend back up north saying a quick hi, or if I'm out on my own and see something funny I want to tell the Mr but its not worth a phone call. On average I probably text about 3 times a month.
