I understand the dissapointment of FFXI posters but why is there so much animosity between the Asylum and OOT?

It's mostly feigned. It's a long running joke that only really makes sense if you were around at the time of the split, but some of the newer folks think it's more genuine than it really is.

I'm dissapointed in the OoT, it's not nearly as forgiving as =10.
That said, **** =10.

What Nexa said, mostly.

At the height of the Assylum's "who can be most offensive and blindly aggressive" fest, there were quite distinct characteristics to both fora.

Assylum was overtly political, loaded with the most graphic expletives and an opportunity to vent relentlessly, while OOT was lolcatz and fUck-all else.

I just saw an email asking, in all apparent earnestness, "Which part of the CD needs to be cleaned?"

It reminded me of some OOT posts I've seen, for some reason.

Forum=28 was created specifically because people were too thin-skinned to post in =4. Then Alla stole our name and gave it to the whiners and stuck us with "The Asylum".

Not the best start for a forum.

This is also where the =4/=28 thing comes from. People called the Asylum =4 to signify that the forum never changed, just the name (i.e. Alla didn't make "the Asylum" for us, he made a new "OoT" for them).

Thus concludes today's history lesson.

I knew the history, but did not understand the apparent animosity. The only thing I have to say is this. The Asylum has a reputation for flame wars, political and religious warfare. I've not yet really seen it (its why I said "unsure" on best flamer). Is the Asylum going soft?

We're old.

There used to be another thread re: the schism (the one where someone nominates the name "The Back Room" for the forum and I say that's one step away from "The Glory Hole") but it seems to have been deleted Smiley: dubious

I think part of it stems from some users thought there was some sort of favoritism going on.

Smiley: laugh

I never realized that a FFXI poster was the one who came up with "Asylum."

Flame Wars in the traditional sense are passé.

There was a ton of political discourse from about Jan 2008 through Election day. We're kind of burned out on it now. Check back after Obama's 100 days.

Ok, listen up. Here's the bitter truth about the Asylum.

The Asylum used to be the Out of Topic forum. Prior to that, it was the OoT forum on the uBB boards. It was populated by a subgroup of EQ posters who became rather insular and xenophobic. When we moved to the new boards, we continued to be insular and xenophobic. FFXI players came here, got mocked and left crying. Alla asked us to be nice. We weren't. Seeing that we weren't going to play well with others in the OoT boards, Alla decided to make a new OoT and give us our own exclusive playground: the Asylum.

Get it? Yeah, it's full of in-jokes and circle jerks and cliques. The Asylum means cliques. It's a social club. It's a fraternity. It's an organisation of elitists. It's based entirely on who is "in" and who is just a poster trying to make himself fit in. It's not a "flame board", it's a place Alla set aside for the Old Guard and the "in crowd" to feel special and act elitist. Just by being here you open yourself to flames and rate-downs and a GFY for your opinions. Go ahead and cry about how unfair it is. See if anyone here gives a rat's ***.

Like it or not, you have to "prove yourself" to fit in. People come here and one of three things happen: They are clever, intelligent and funny enough to fit in, they don't fit in and they leave or they don't fit in and they sit here making a fool of themselves trying to bring us down. But we don't care. Just like how Chet and Dane laugh after they trip their caddy into the mud and drive off to meet Muffy on the yacht, we don't care if you say you cunningly provoked us or proved that we're all predictable jerks. We're still going to pat ourselves on the back and laugh at how we tripped your dumb *** into the mud.
Those were the days, my friends
We thought they'd never end...

I was, and in fact if you search the FFXI main forum in about January 2004, you can find a post from me complaining about how mean the Asylum (OOT at the time) posters were, and that I'd never go back Smiley: laugh

Only took a couple months after that for me to to renounce my FFXI citizenship. By the time of the split, however, I was on the Asylum's side. So you can blame me for the name*, but not for the split itself.

*Other people wanted to name it The Dungeon. Tell me which is worse.
