So Russia has cut gas supplies and its affecting EU countries.

3 problems I see
1) Ukraine citizens are at real risk of very actually dying without gas at this time of year, its tantamount to blackmail
2) Its affected the EU, what will the response be? Investment in alternatives combined with negative thoughts to Russia?
3) Who is in the wrong here? Ukraine or Russia? Both?

I have only seen what is in the news (so not very informed). Anyone have any idea of whats really going on there?

I just spent some time crying over the thought of people from the Ukraine dying of freezing cold as they are missing gas and I'm just so dissapointed over the entire situation Smiley: frown

Anyone who thinks this is more than Putin flexing his e-peen at Ukraine and EU (to prove that he can) is reading waaaay too much into it.

Flexing his E-peen will cost. People will not forget his power trip and it will most likely very actually kill people. Retribution is not very nice in the long term ....

Have you been to Ukraine in the last decade or so? People will absolutely forget this in the daily hustle and bustle of not getting shot in the face or starving to death.

I was not talking about the Ukraine

Europe will realise it cannot afford to be blackmailed in the same way. My hope is it spurs alternative power sources.

These are not people to be dependant upon.

Oh, what, the EU? Why does Putin care? What are they going to do, stop buying from Gazprom? Invade? The EU is nothing if not pragmatic, they'll ignore it and pay more for nat gas if it's in their interest to.

It did used to be called The Ukraine. So it's not entirely weird to call it that.

Putin better be careful. He's running the risk of receiving a strongly worded letter.

Which reminds me, "Himalaya" is already a plural word. It is The Himalaya, NOT The Himalayas. We don't say, The Rocky Mountainses.

And it is not Titanic, and it is not Earth. Neither are conscious in and of themselves, or a nation-state. It's The Titanic, and the Earth. Although I can tell English has already lost that one, the way it's almost entirely lost the -ly ending for adverbs, and lost the word "heating" in Australia for the word "hotting". It's totally weird to be old enough to have your own language change on you.

Yeah, back when it was part of Russia (well, the USSR anyway), it was "the Ukraine" as in "the Ukraine region". Apparently, since becoming an independant nation, it's just Ukraine these days.

I still find myself calling it "the Ukraine" (which Nobby once sniffed at me for hence my comments in this thread). Old habits die hard.

"Earth" is the name of the planet. You don't say "The probe landed on the Mars", do you?

"Earth" is the name of the planet. You don't say "The probe landed on the Uranus", do you?

Fixed for my own amusement.

it's because of the implied pieces of the sentence fragment.

We live on 'The planet Earth'.

We live on 'The (planet) Earth'.

We live on '(The planet) Earth'.

But this works equally well:

We live on Earth.
Earth is the third planet from the sun.

Also, I rarely hear people say "the planet earth". It's almost always just "planet earth". Use of "the" is entirely contextual.

It is because that phrase is implied.

In that case, I have no idea how you think people are using it incorrectly.

Himalaya is not plural. It names one mountain range.
