The "apples to apples" approach of this study, while certainly relevant in the context of determining whether a pledge is of any real value, doesn't really address the more relevant issue of abstinence education as a whole

Good point. If only there were some data, somewhere, out in the great void that measured the success of these programs as whole. ****, you'd think SOMEONE would have looked into this. If only I knew a human sexuality researcher. Oh hey! I have sex with one, ironically enough!! It turns out there ARE such studies!!

Guess what they show!! I'll give you three options:

AO works as well as contraceptive focused education.

AO works better than contraceptive focused education.

AO is a complete, abject failure as a technique to educate children about human sexuality resulting in higher rates of pregnancy and STDs and, arguably, onset of sexual activity.

Did I give it away?

I'm thinking of taking a virginity pledge. You know, as field research.

Wait, what? You pledge to stay a virgin and your dad gives you a Princess Di ring? What kind of sickness is that?

You're from the South, how many girls at your school were named Electra?

Are you trying to say you want to get knocked up, because that's really a discussion I'd rather we had privately.

I remember when my cousin took this virginity pledge and told the whole family. I remember hanging out with my sister, annoyed that my grandma was talking so proudly about her waiting until marriage. It annoyed my mom too b/c she had given us access to birth control from our early to mid-teens and you know, her parenting was apparently substandard. Of course my cousin was the one who ended up being pregnant in high school.

No. You didn't. How about you pick one, and then present data showing that it's true.

I keep asking for this, and no one can seem to provide it. Show me a study showing that AO actually increased the rate of teen pregnancy and/or STD compared with other forms of sex education. Cause all I keep seeing are studies like the one's linked in this thread so far. Numbers comparing rates of success for virginity pledges, AO statistic which show no decrease (but no increase) in rates for those things, etc...

So. For the record. I'm going to go with option 1: "AO works as well as contraceptive focused education". So far, all the data I've seen supports this pick.

What's your pick Smash?

You could just take the extra two seconds to go back to the last thread about this (linked in this thread) with citations and links to numerous studies, if you were actually even a little bit interested...we've been here before.

I remember the only "sex talk" I had with my dad was on a long drive somewhere, and during it he informed me about the perils of a "reputation" and told me if I stayed a virgin until marriage he'd give me the most exquisite wedding/honeymoon/white princess spoiling I could dream of.

Poor guy, he tried pretty hard.
