I do find it refreshing to see such delightfully Pollyanna views from folks who think that, sans religion, there'd be any less violence, oppression, etc in the world rather than mankind just finding new excuses for it. Their naive faith in mankind rivals that of the sunniest female Lutheran officemate; the one who decorates her cubical with pictures of Jesus, that "Footprints in the Sand" poem, photos of kittens and the occassional Precious Moments figurine.

Brings a smile to my heart, it does Smiley: grin
That's pretty smug.

You could call it just a Pollyanna to claim that people are always going to find excuses to oppress, so don't blame religion.

Faith in mankind may be naive, but I'll count on my fellow peoples get me through tough times before ever praying to god to save my soul, my faltering crops, or my oppressed community.

I don't think that claiming the worst of people counts as Pollyanna Smiley: laugh

I don't see where the two are mutually exclusive. As the old saying goes "Pray as if it all depends on God and work as though it all depends on you".

Or as my Grandfather used to say "There comes a time in a man's life when he has to say to himself "this isn't worth it", walk away and make himself a sandwich".

Its just not as impressive as Obamas web site. I need a sexy and intelligent Pope please. I'm sure when God created Adam that he did not have Benedict in mind.

Call me shallow but there we go Smiley: dubious

Your grandfather sounds like a lazy, and hungry, man Smiley: frown

Laziness and a taste for sanwiches runs in the family. I prefer to think of it as being the bigger man, though I'd need to eat a lot more sandwiches for that to happen.

As for secular humanists, especially those who exist in wealthy western countries, I've seen plenty of complacency and not much more evidence of more organized movements for social justice than among religious people , unless I'm missing something.

It's been awhile, so I guess i should once again point to Ethical Culture and the American Ethical Union, as an non dogma religious movement that tries to promote social justice.

There is also various other secular humanistic movements around the world, it just takes looking.

Ooooh the burden on poor Kavekk. So you have no demonstrable evidence but you expect me to believe you based on faith or something? Sorry, I actually question your views. :P But apparently I'm unreasonable and even though you have a lot of really great arguments, you aren't gonna present them b/c I'm unable to listen to them. You p*ssy.

I love the irony of the use the word 'faith' in the many pages of this thread.

I wish i had a copy of the talk that an Ethical Culture Leader gave on being a Spiritual Atheist years ago. I know a few folk that fall under the label as such, as well as those that can be as dogmatic as Smash over there being no magical god being watching over us.

One note about Irish history. The problems between England and Ireland go much father back then the split between Henry the VII and a dress wearing guy in Rome refusing his wishes.

Being descended from both Irish Catholic and Protestants, I have a rather divided view over religion and it being used as an social weapon upon the masses.

I think you missed the point of what you quoted. It wasn't saying that there were no secular social justice movements-- and if you knew me, you would realize that I've worked in secular social justice movements for years-- but that there is no evidence that secular humanists people are more involved in social justice movements than religious people.
