The US government has said it will provide $17.4bn (£11.6bn) in loans to help troubled carmakers General Motors and Chrysler to survive

Didn't the Pubbies hyjack and reject this in Congress? Thought they refused because the Unions refused to cut wages.

How about a sub-$10,000 quality sedan? I'll take one prz.

Why not a bar of gold for $1, you need a subcompact not a sedan like This.

Honestly how many times is there more than 2 people in your car?

Quite often.

1. Kiddo's friends come over to spend the night every weekend
2. I'm often the designated driver when we hit the strip clubs
3. I'm tired of not having enough room to put groceries when I shop

I actually looked at getting a Nissan Versa a while back, but even that tiny car was selling for $12k+ at the time.

Our entire car buying mentality is based on what we might need, a few times, at some point in the future. If we just bought what we needed and not what we might need there would be millions less of SUV's and trucks on the road (and quite a few more motorcycles and scooters).

The senate shot down a new bill to bail out the big 3. The current administation has tapped the TARP funds and used the remaining funds of the initial $350 billion to bail them out until March, when the new administation will try and work out a long term solution.

Its good news, as long as they do very actually restructure and start producing cars that sell at a production cost that makes a profit Smiley: smile

I think they first need to make cars that people want to buy. No more of this "If we build it, they will come" attitude.

You mean vehicles that we don't consider throw aways? The problem the Big 3 have is not what types of cars they build, but the quality. While there isn't as large a gap today as there was 10 years ago, the fact still remains that a Honda, Toyota or Nissan will outlast anything America's Big 3 produce. There's also still the perception that American vehicles are complete junk and the gap of 10 years ago is still just as large.

Maybe Steve Jobs will revel a partnership between the Big 3 and Apple and the iCar will save them all. (Then again, VW has already pretty much filled the Apple niche of car-making for a few years now)

I've got an 83 Honda Accord with about 240 thousand miles on it. It still runs, albeit kinda poorly now. But the car is older than I am, and when I was in highschool I could still get 30 mpg on it.

I don't use it any more, but it still sits in my driveway.

But I do have a 95 Dodge Neon with about 200 thousand on it that still runs great. And if you don't mind rust spots. It only cost me 400 dollars to buy, and maybe another 500 in a few parts here and there. Gets roughly 30mpg as well.

The two highest selling vehicles this year were trucks. Granted, the the top two being the Silverado and F-150 are for utility purposes. Almost all other trucks and SUV's had dismal sales.

Edit: If you can't see the future from those numbers, the companies should just go under from sheer stupidity.

It's alarmingly large inside, though, isn't it? It's like a Nissan Tardis in there. Particularly the headroom. I'm 6'2 and have more than once hit the roof of cars with lots of cars if I sit particularly upright, but Shaq could drive that thing with no trouble. It is a little narrow door to door though.

Much bigger than I expected. I'm 6' myself so being able to comfortably enter the car is always a positive first.

Not only was it voted down but the majority of Americans don't want the auto makers bailed out. But since when has Bush, or american politicians in general, ever done something in recent memeory that the public wanted them to do?

While I don't agree with the government bailing out poor business practices... the big three will take everything with them if they fall.

Locally, restaruants are not very active, the Casino is "hurting" (I put that lightly, they still pull massive profits, but have laid off over 150 employees). Hardware stores are dead. People are keeping to themselves and buying cheap necessities.

Just about the only business that will be doing well with all the unemployement and wage cuts will be Wal-Mart.

Massive consumption of poor-quality and essentially useless shite from the far east is what Christmas is all about after all! Never mind 90% of it will be landfill by June....

Baby Jebus would be proud.
