I should just re-name this thread "Thumb Misses Car Accidents Today." Had to go pick up my daughter from school today and bring her back to the house and head back into work. Atrocious rain makes visibility pretty much nil. See some driver go from the fast lane and try to cross 4 lanes to get to the exit lane. Not good. He loses control, plows into two cars in front of me. I'm in one of the middle lanes and instinctively start pumping my brakes, I start to spin and end up on the shoulder of the freeway, and somehow missed all other cars.
Highway Patrol arrives to find cars were all turned which way. Traffic came to a dead stop and it turns out that I'm not the only one facing the wrong direction. The cop checks on me, asks if I want to file a report. I say no so he waves me to get my car pointed in the right direction and on my merry way.
I'm so not looking forward to the drive home tonight.
Ack! What amazed me was the number of just plain stupid folks out there today. It's like they forget simple stuff like say turning their damn headlights on when visibility is low (like on the freeway when it's raining really hard).
I have a *very* short drive into work. I do get on the freeway, then off at the next exit (saves a ton of surface street time). I can normally see cars coming up from behind as I'm merging onto the freeway, but today it was like "guess and hope" day, since about 75% of the cars on that stretch didn't have their lights on. I almost merged right into a car, but my spidey sense went off and I *really* craned my neck around to look in the blindspot on my side and barely noticed the car (sans headlights) right there. So not only driving with no lights on, but matching speeds in the blindspot of a car in a lane that has to merge with his. Sheesh!
Didn't see any accidents, but I'm not surprised there were a ton. It's doubly bad when the first rain is a pretty strong one. Not only super slick, but also very low visibility...
