...is a load of crap. I was ignorant in my childhood, but now I see this song for what it really is.
It is a promotion of closet bigotry.
Let's summarize this song with a few bullets:
- Rudolph is different from the "normal" reindeer (red nose, duh)
- The "normal" reindeer all hate him for this, they tease him and don't let him do the things that reindeer normally do (reindeer games)
- All of a sudden, their boss (Santa) goes up to Rudolph and essentially says how awesome he is, without ever actually doing anything to punish the other bigot reindeer or even hinting that he knows about it (but we know he does, because Santa sees EVERYTHING)
- Now, apparently like a true face-heel turn, those other reindeer start to copy Santa and essentially say how awesome Rudolph is, when I'm sure they don't believe that for a second and only said that so they would not end up being punished for their bigotry
Now, how different is this from what I'm guessing could be a common real life scenario involving, say, a black person? I bet there are a bunch of closet racist bigots out there who pretend to get along with blacks (or whatever other sort of prejudiced-against people/lifestyle you care to use here) just fine, but only do it because they want to suck up to whatever their higher power happens to be (in other words, they only do it so they get to drive the sleigh).
This song is essentially telling us that it's perfectly OK to be a bigot, as long as you know when to hide it. Great moral for the children, there.
Bah humbug.
(Yes, I've doubleposted this from another forum elsewhere, guess which one and you win a free malasada)
