Seems like the coalition to oust harper is breaking up, mostly because people realized how much ill will it would generate. Copying it here verbatim from Frum at NRO:

Quote:
The Grand Old Duke of York

You remember the nursery rhyme? It seems perfectly to describe the sudden panicked retreat from the Liberal-NDP attempt to take power in Ottawa without an election ...

Leadership candidate Michael Ignatieff said the coalition needs to explore options other than bringing the government down next month, said the source. Other speakers, such as Nova Scotia MP Mike Savage and Yukon MP Larry Bagnall offered a similar view.

David McGuinty, the Ottawa MP, said that the Governor-General had scolded all MPs and essentially told them to go home and play nice. He said the party needs more options and should meet with the Prime Minister to negotiate a solution to the current crisis. If coalition negotiators say they cannot negotiate changes, send in new negotiators, he said. Bob Rae, the Toronto MP and leadership candidate, called for the party to stick to the present course.

When asked whether the coalition was starting to unravel, one MP said: “It’s coming apart at the seams.”

What caused the abrupt reverse? According to a well-connected friend, it's overnight polling that showed overwhelming public disapproval of the Liberal-NDP ploy, with Conservatives surging to 46% approval and Liberals plummeting to 23% and NDP to 13%. That's landslide territory in a multiparty system ....

The problem was also that they weren't doing this to call an election, but to be appointed directly to government, which was unprecedented in scope. It was also over an issue of funding, as opposed to anything that could justify a mandate from the people for such a radical change.

It's good that this ends, it would be a scary precedent if it didn't.
