What is going on up there?

What does it take for a PM to suspend Parliament? What does it mean? What's likely to happen next?

Basically, the current government is pooched and come late Januray, we're most likely going into another election. Just about the only thing that could stop that is the PM stepping down and letting another party member step in. Even that won't guarantee it though.

The coalition may also take power... in which case there's no way of knowing when an election will happen (4 years max). Although it'll be only a matter of time before the in-fighting tears it apart.

All 4 parties are an embarrassment.

But wasnt this particular party voted in in October? Have they screwed up that badly that you can do another vote so soon? And it would have been nice if that was an option for us 8 years ago Smiley: glare

Okay, wait. So Harper could theoretically step down and another member of his own party could just, what? Pick up the scepter?

The person that is next voted leader of the Conservatives will "pick up the scepter"....but most likely another election in the new year.

We just keep at it until the Liberals win. Smiley: grin

They were in power before the election and pissed off the opposing parties then. Then, they get in power again, with more seats but still not enough to earn a majority, and continued pissing off the other parties. The opposition is claiming it;s that the budget for '09 doesn't include bailouts for the economy, but the Conservatives also tried to remove public spending for campaigns as well. The Conservatives don't need the money, the other parties would be fubar without it.

I think that if Harper grants some small concession to the opposition parties in the budget he could stay in power. They called his bluff, but I think that with an attempt at compromise the coalition won't hold together. If they do, then I doubt we'll have an election, we'll have a year or so of the three of them bickering and hopefully doing something, and then we'll have an election.

As soon the Bloc gets their act together. So, never.

Why would Quebec ever separate? They've got an entire nation by the balls doing whatever they want.
