Any guesses on who he might appoint? That I've seen, he never really made any bold or concrete statements on the direction he wishes America to take its drug control policy. I sent an email through his transition web site two weeks ago, and unsurprisingly, have yet to receive a response. Not even auto-generated.

I foresee little policy change on the drug scheduling front. As much as I'd like to see some reclassifications or removals, I highly doubt it is a priority. It would be nice if the DEA stopped raiding state sanctioned dispensories in California. It would also be a good thing if the fed started to take more of a treatment stance and less of a time in prison for miniscule amounts of narcotics.

Edit: Fixed

It thinks it's part of the link. You can use the URL tag to define your link and that should clear it up.

Who gives a fuck? There isn't going to be any liberalization of national drug policy. Stop living in a dreamworld.

You're right, that was mean. I hear Tommy Chong is on the short list.

It isn't like I expect the person to have any real power or anything. I don't have a bag of brown strapped to the bottom of my chair simply waiting for the go ahead to go out and buy my needles. I understand that drug policy is mostly set on a state level. Still though, this conversation might as well have been about Clinton or Daschle. When you break it down, neither of those two will be making decisions, the thousands of advisors in and around the White House will be making that policy, Obama will just be choosing which idea to follow.

However, I was hoping he would choose someone that would at least rein in the DEA a bit.

I guess I should go out looking for fairy dust and Neverland instead eh?

Justice runs DEA. ONDCP really has nothing to do with them. They work together the same way FBI occasionally works with State.

So long as Alito doesn't end up there again, I'm happy.

I think, if Obama is re-elected to a second term, drug reform would be something that happens in his 5th year. The subject is too touchy to handle in a first term, but doing it early enough in the second term will give all the OHNOEZDRUGCRIMINALZWILLEATOURBABIES people time to get over it before 2016.

Perhaps it'll fall under the auspices of the Department of Redundancy Department.
