With small kids and cats, it's best to stick to unbreakable ornaments like bows and wooden toys in at least the lower branches. I wait until after my birday to decorate a small fake tree, as I need to do some major cleaning first. I love real trees, but don't feel it's worth the cost for us.
The holiday season is just an excuse for me to show off my penguin collection around the living room. As to gifts, I try to make most of them with a few books or silly gifts for a few folks when an item just calls attention to buy them. Last year we got a set of Good and Evil Unicorns for middle child and a spinner to find out "What a Pirate would Do" for her boyfriend.
Guess I should look at what yarn I have and start knitting for grandkids. They seem to expect something I knit for them now.
