What I love is how these people use death and injury to fight the evils of promiscuity, selfishness and Godlessness. Young people are horribly prone to brainwashing.

The cynic is me is screaming to point out that terrorist attacks in India by Islamist fundamentalists are relatively common. The only difference is that this time it was directed at foreigners. That's the crux, and that's why all the hoopla in our media.

But considering they have a turbulent relationship with Pakistan, the Kashmir problem, and the fact that they have the second biggest Muslim population of any state in the world, it's not really all that surprising.

Reading Freedom at Midnight, by Dominique Lapierre and Larry Collins (yeah I had to look that up), helped me sort of understand the unique mess that India is and sadly enough this slaughter is hardly unique, excepting it's targets.
On the bright side - overseas travel bonus for India now, yeah things are really looking up Smiley: frown

I've eaten at the Oberoi a lot, used the toilets and the bar at the Taj and got fully pissed at Leopolds cafe more than once.

We've been in touch with all of our family there and they are all fine wich is great of course, but theres a particular doorman at the Oberoi, a great big sikh with a a massive moustache and a smile that melts people, who I really like. I hope he's ok Smiley: frown

And leopolds is a bit of a backpackery sort of hang-out, so i hope none of my hippy mates were there at the time.....

This whole thing is really awful.

I don't think that the events in India are connected to text jokes. Tho' I can see why you would like to connect the two.

since there seems to be some censuring of reporting on major news outlets in effect, I been following updates on Twitter. Arun Shanbhgan has been giving emotional side by tweets and his wordpress blog, while MumbaiAttacks and Breakingnews stay on top of any new information on the events as they happen. Trying to follow the ongoing story on twitter can quickly become overwhelming.

Arun's posts and updates have me near tears, not that I need any reason to cry today.

I disagree Red, I think it's the scale and length of time the events are taking, which allows the media to work itself into a frenzy.

The fact that most of the death are Indians and that only part of the attack was aimed at Westerners has made it more newsworthy I agree but I think it's now common for Major stations to focus on events that they can use as a whole day follow the drama live events.

it's good for ratings.

So far I believe only 3 non indians are confirmed, one Brit, one Italian and one Japanese.

Pakistan should expect Ninja and Samurai attacks by Xmas.

Well, the fact that this is "on-going" and that it's a "constantly evolving situation" certainly helps it fit into the 24-hour news cycle. But really, it's about the fact it's in the heart of Mumbai, and against "Western targets".

Since 2000, over a thousand people have died in India from 69 Islamic terrorist attacks. I can't remember hearing about that many of those.

None of this makes it any less sad or tragic for the people there, but it's not really about AQ striking in India, it's about AQ striking westerners in India.

Well as the BNP would say "the death of one Brit is a tragedy, the Death of a million in the subcontinent is a statistic.

And while this is obviously bad, India has had over 800 people die in terror attack this year alone.

For Islam to catch up to just the Iraqi civilian death toll, that is dead people that even the US military agrees were innocent bystanders, they'd have to have 7 or 8 attacks this size every month for about 300 years.

Just saying. If you want to keep score of dead innocents, Islam's way way way way way ahead at present. If you care more about intent, then we are. I'd recommend asking a dead 5 year old's parents how important it is to them what the guy who killed their child was thinking immediately beforehand.

Just a point. The article in the Age today was focusing on the one or possibly two Australian men who may or may not be dead, and the young girl who was shot in the leg at Leopold's. There was very little about the Indian casualties or about who was responsible (anonymous young guys in jeans, apparently).

Countries always care more about their own.

I've been working & living in outback Aust these last 9 months & have just heard about the Mumbai drama. You know my biggest problem today? Water...waiting for some fuggin rain because the river is all fouled up. I'm sure the people in The Taj hotel don't care about my problems, but would swap me for theirs in a heartbeat.
I believe it was Karl Marx that said religion is the opiate of the masses.
Islamic zealotry & christian fundamentalism (vice versa)...opiate of the ignorant.

Karl Marx then took a long haul, exhaled and said, "Opiate is the religion of the elite".
