In the quest to find new and exciting things to watch, I am making the following offer: Give me the name of a film available on video which you're kind of curious to hear how it is (or how bad it is) and I shall watch it for you and post a review. Essentially, I'll take the bullet for you so you don't have to watch it. You can decide for yourself based on what you know about me if my opinion on a film should influence your choice of whether or not to watch it.

Restrictions:
The film must be available on Netflix since that's where I'm getting it from.
I'm interested in seeing something I haven't seen so if I've seen it, I'm not watching it again. I will let you know if I liked it or not.
How quickly you get your review will depend on how quickly Netflix gets me the movie and when I can sit and watch it. However, the first three films I accept will be the first three films in my queue.

I'll probably limit this astounding offer to the first 3-5 acceptable flicks. Have at it.

Southland Tales.

Just for the record, I've already bitten the bullet and watched it myself. However, it's something I need to hear about from other people so I can decide if I'm crazy or not.

Sex and the City. For many reasons, mainly being time, I never watched it.

If you have seen that ... Little Miss Sunshine?

Sweet Christ. Smiley: laugh

I added:
Super High Me
The Big Bounce (you had the name wrong and I almost wound up watching some Affleck/Paltrow flick)
Southland Tales
The Visitor

...

And Sex & the City. But I made that one fifth. So there.

Super High Me is available as an Instant "Watch It Now" flick so I might knock that out tonight or tomorrow. City of Ember is not yet on video.

I've been horrid and asked you to watch a film you prefer not to .. how about???

"Kung Fu Panda" or ...
"Iron Man"?

Again, 2 films I missed that I would like to see. Also did anyone else have visions of "Hong Kong Phooey" when seeing the trailer to "Kung Foo Panda"?

Could you screen a few Paul Newman movies? My wife won't watch anything I suggest because people die horribly and she gets depressed. If you could assure us that Paul doesn't die in Hombre or Hud, that would be great!

Here, I can do a bullet of Iron Man:

Good dumb action. RDJr. plays it well.

To Joph - "In Bruges" please!

Keep meaning to acquire it (partly because I love Bruges, and partly because what I've heard intrigues me).

This was very low on my priorities to watch, but with a few train journeys planned last week, I downloaded it for my iPod.

Robert Downey and the tone of the movie match perfectly - somehow it works on two levels. Firstly, it's a CGI action flick about a Superhero. My usual problem with this genre is the suspension of disbelief, but the plot held my attention and I was kept from questioning the silliness of the technology. The pace is managed cleverly, with a balance of white-knuckle action, cliff-hanging 'How can he get out of this?' moments, and contemplative spells that counterpoint the action.

Secondly, the movie has a fair stab at a message. It isn't overly laboured, nor is it the usual saccharine Hollywood old testament crap about good and evil. Avoiding partisan left vs right politics, it does have quite a refreshingly cynical take on military power and corruption. And it's thread that holds the plot together comfortably.

But most of all, it sets out to entertain, and delivers well. Downey's character is at once charming, cool, and a teensy bit mental, Jeff Bridges is a good (if a bit onedimensional) baddy, and Gwyneth Paltrow dances neatly between aloof and alluring.

Matthew Libatique's cinematography is 1st class - more dark and moody than the usual comic-hero movie, but easier on the eye than the Batman series. Nice balance.

All in all, very watchable, some deft screenwriting, and Downey's performance is the ace up the sleeve. I expect a significant franchise to follow, and if the producers don't mess up the sequel, it could endure like Indiana Jones or Star Wars.

8/10

I haven't seen Apocalypto.
The Illusionist was pretty alright, the ending was a little meh.
Princess Mononoke is beautiful and should be seen at least once.
Atonement was stunning and I dreamed about it for weeks.

We should start a movie watching and review club. It could be like a book club, but for lazy ********.

I realize that the reviews could never be as in depth and beautiful as those that Smash and I wrote for "Roadhouse 2", but we could try.

no no, I mean where we all agree to watch a movie over a weekend and then review it Monday morning. I hate Monday mornings anyway.
