I'm pretty sure public gambling - at least without a permit is illegal, but how about a sign taking bets on the assassination date of our Pres. elect?

STANDISH — The Town Council, spurred by angry e-mails from around the country, voted Thursday to condemn a sign posted recently at the Oak Hill General Store asking customers to bet on an assassination of President-elect Barack Obama.

....the Standish general store posted a sign asking customers to place $1 bets on the date of an Obama assassination and saying: "Let's hope someone wins."

Is this inciting violence?

There's gotta be a law about betting on illicit activity, or something.

Nothing has been mentioned about the betting part of this. I don't think this store-owner was actually collecting money at all. If he is though and it's a charity donation, it would be ok.

It's in very poor taste, but assuming the Secret Service does its due diligence in investigating the source of any threatening language made against a protected individual (and finds nothing), I can't see anything outright illegal here.

Put up a sign taking bets on when the store owner will get shot in the face during a robbery.

Isn't there some kind of community standard where public outrage would count for something, or is it one of "those" towns?

Well, in fact, the article is about a special town meeting called to address this because of the public outrage. The Town Council voted to condemn the sign.

No, I agree. If wishing for a convenient bullet without actively advocating or inciting the use of same were a prosecutable crime, I'd have been in deep **** for the last five years.

I imagine they could nail him on illegal gambling.

And I agree that it would make sense for there to be a law, if there isn't already, against gambling on illegal activities. Under the grounds that the money at stake would encourage the undertaking of said activity.

Probably is, but the monetary stakes would need to be much higher to get the attention of ATF under RICO guidelines. Hmm, I wonder, under the circumstances, whether the "catalyst to harm" standard would apply.

lol, Standish, Me. I used to live near there. That town sucked and really, they are so many rightwingers around there.

But they have the right to be tasteless and wrong if the threat is not real.

I think if I were in that town I'd put up an even bigger sign taking bets on when the store owner jack *** gets sued by Obama. I would think that inciting an act of aggression against Obama would be some kind of crime.

I think this is indeed the case. While this sign, hanging in a lil general store in Podunk America presents no threat. The same sign posted on the lawn of the RNC office in DC may very well be construed as a 'real' threat and therefore unlawful.

It's blasphemy!

Seriously though, there was a similar story here about an established bookmaker taking bets on Obama being shot during his first term. They withdrew it after people complained.

Having said that, I recall our thread here about people that would die during the year, and a few people (myself included) had Obama down. Granted, there was anything on the bet, and we didn't use a slogan saying we'd hope it would happen. Guess it's all about intentions...

Well, the fact is that there are a lot of wingnuts out there who hate him for being a black man with power. An intelligent, well spoken black man with real power.

The odds that there are and will be conspiracies to assassinate him? 100%

How many of those are credible and serious is another question; but this is certainly a real opportunity for the hardcore racists in the U.S. to face their slimy side.

On a happier note, Paddy Power are taking bets that Obama will become the next President of... West Ham United, currently languishing in the mid-table of the Premiership.

The odds are 10,000-1.

Obama becoming President of an entity which is over-hyped, under-performing, financially troubled, constantly pining for its former glory, and with a slightly racist past? 10,000-1 seems a bit generous.

Attempt to assasinate a president and win a few hundred bucks? Yeah I am sure there are plenty of people who think that's worth it.

Even bigger sign taking bets on how many liberals would show up to ***** and moan about it if it wasn't taken down.

You know, or for his political beliefs, his connections, and the fact that such an inexperienced guy won the presidency with a catchword and heavy favor leaning toward anything that wasn't a republican.

Seriously though, while in terribly bad taste, I don't think it is anything dangerous, no more than any other dope who jokes around about such things.

Heh were it a bet for when Bush will get assasinated then this would be a thread about you all placing bets.

Which just goes to show how out of touch (and probably just plain dumb) you are.

Why is it that all of the Republicans on this board have a tendency to froth at the mouth and toss out derogatory phrases about liberals, instead of just actually looking at what's happening for once?

You posting it here? I don't think so, but I'll forward it to the FBI just in case. Oh wait, you're just referring to it in righteous indignation, right? The way every media outlet got a free pass to say the phrase "hose negro" 100,000 times last week? That's ok then. What's the big deal, really? People bet on all sorts of things. I have $10 at 500,000 to 1 that you'll be raped by a chimpanzee. It's only a problem if I start releasing pissed off horny chimps in your area. So unless you live in Somerville, MA, you're in good shape there.

Wonder why you liberals didn't feel this way when people burned effigies of W. You people are such hypocrites no wonder I don't frequent this site more often.

H*ll that crazed lady from Ca set up camp next to W's ranch in TX and the liberals actually burned effigies of W. Yet somehow I doubt if a neighbor of Obama's were to hang a life like image of Obama you would react with indifference.

Because burning effigies of demonstrably evil people is just funny. If Bush weren't evil, it would be pretty troubling. Given that he makes Stalin look like Ghandi, it's just amusing.
