I'm suprised to learn that black widow bites don't really need to be treated with antivenin. I thought they were pretty deadly... but apparently not so much. You have symptoms for a few days if not treated and then you get better.

I think the biggest problem with black widow bites is that they happen to children a lot, because children are apt to get into just the kinds of places that black widows hide, and children get a lot sicker from them.

Ah, the commonly held belief that anything in a can or spray must be lethal to insects (and arachnids). Windex, air freshener, wood polish, spray starch, hair spray, etc etc.

Actually windex, containing significant amounts of ammonia, is rather effective at killing Arachnids. Still not as good as clove oil though. Or a well placed size 15 shoe.

Hairspray is pretty effective against spiders.

I dunno if it's true or not, but I always heard that it makes it so they can't breath. That and if it's extra-strong hold I'm sure they'll find it hard to move.

Depends on the type, but most hairspray is only useful against spiders after 20 or so minutes, and only if it is thick enough to set up in their breathing membranes. Sometime the alchohol in hairspray will cause the spider to die of alchohol poisening too.

You really want a pokey stick. And this:

Electrical Contact cleaner + Lighter works well too...

We had a crazy bulgarian guy working for us who hated spiders. He just happened to have a can near by when he saw a black widow, and he pulled out his lighter. The flames were huge, went up the entire shop wall (about 20-30 Feet).

The spider didn't die right away though. Kinda tried to run away, then burned, then curled up in a little ball.
