Play a rousing game of Decide Intent On A Spoiled Ballot! Examine real life spoiled Minnesota ballots and figure out what the person was thinking. Marvel at how people can fuck up such a basic system. Marvel again at the tortured logic campaign lawyers will use to try to discredit a ballot.

Each of my choices was the majority opinion when I voted. So I suppose I can take some solace in the notion that it shouldn't be too hard to reach a consensus on these.

And you'll know the Lizard People when you see 'em.

The only one that truly shocks me is number 2. What next, you left some DNA on the voting slip so its void?

It's pretty interesting to see how just an inadvertent pencil mark can make a ballot questionable.

BE CAREFUL VOTERS!!

#9 is pretty lame on the part of the Franken campaign.

then again, #8 & #10 show pretty clear intent -- and not for Coleman.

You could argue that technically they did add extraneous markings that invalidated the ballet paper. Thats nonesense though as that does not account for human behaviour and natural errors being made.

If you make an error on the ballot like those shown, are you able to ask for a fresh ballot and start again to ensure your vote is counted? If not, thats just not democratic.

If you realize you screwed up, you can always ask for a fresh ballot and they'll "spoil" the old one (they're required to keep it but they'll mark it as spoiled and stash it away).

I would say that if the ballot is clearly marked, it should be counted that way. For ballot 6, if you aren't intelligent enough to fill in the circle as it's clearly indicated, the ballot should be rejected. Ballot 8 on the other hand is pretty clearly a vote for Franken, while 9 is pretty clearly for Barkley. 11 should be rejected and counted neither way.

It seems like a lot of the votes on how they should be counted are heavily influenced by party ties. My view, most of those should just be thrown out for being spoiled. The voters should have gotten a new ballot.

The Poll workers should run a check over the ballots when they get them for these types of errors, but that would infringe on privacy, so maybe some really big clear signs by the ballot box would work... maybe.

So the one with the eraser marks (#9): is the ballot filled in with ink or pencil? And what should have it been filled in with?

They always gave me a pen when I voted but Lord only knows what they do up there in Minnesota, land of Wrestler Governors, Marge Gunderson and politically active Lizard People.

My votes each agreed with the majority as well.

I was going on the basis of the statement at the top that if you can determine intent, even if they fuck up, it's valid.

It's been a few years, but I believe we were given pencils, much like the ones we use here in Maine. The kind you get at the bowling alley; 1/2 size things, poorly sharpened and no eraser.

I think on all but two, maybe three I voted to throw it out. In my mind the intentions were not totally clear.

I was not with the majority on many. Meh.

...and missy, what happens when the power goes out?

WHO'S voting now!?

Honestly, I've not voted in MN for nearly two decades. But this most recent election here in Maine, I used the comforting #2 pencil (it's trustworthy).

Not to start another boring voting machine debate but I'm comforted to know that they can perform a hand recount (and try to determine intent) even if it means sighing over how dumb some folks are.

We had 3 at the voting center I went to this year. Both this election and the last, there was a significantly longer wait for the electronic machines than if you did a paper ballot. I'm too impatient to wait, so I've yet to try one of those high-tech jobbers out.

I find #5 particularly interesting. Note that in the section above, he wrote in "Lizard People" and marked that as his vote, yet in the section with Franken, he wrote in Lizard People, but marked Franken. One can only assume that he intended to vote a straight Lizard People ballot, got to the Senate section and realized that one was already on there...

That honestly explains a lot.
