Am I wrong in thinking that someone should just invade Somalia? It shouldn't even count as a state. It has no government to speak of, and the standard of living can't possibly get worse without the use of land mines.

Ethiopia already tried this and they realized it's not worth the bother.

Seriously? If these tanker owner/operators were smart they'd make a blanket statement that said something like this:

"If another vessel approaches within 100 yards of our ship we will open fire in a preemptory response. Any act of piracy will be met with deadly force."

Then, rather spend $25 mil on ransoming that tanker, they purchase the services of a mercenary special ops team for, say, $10 mil, and go and forcibly return the tanker to their possession. For the kind of money we are talking about, I'm certain there are many mercs and legitimate paramilitary groups willing to guard ocean going vessels to prevent acts of piracy.

The central problem here is that there is no government in Somalia that can concern itself with the issue of piracy along it's borders. In it's absence it is imperative that the companies driving these boats take the necessary measures to keep their cargo and ships safe.

But then again, I don't have a dog in this fight, so if the Saudis want to waste that kind of cash, they are free to do so. But handing that bakeesh over will only embolden these same and other pirates to try again.

What are my chances of getting a Letter of Marque from the governor of Jeddah?

"Yar, get me a 16-cannon sloop and 42 men and we'll have your oil-laden merchantman back in port before the Silver Train reaches Vera Cruz. Also, I'll be escorting your daughter to the ball tonight."

In the interest of preventing the further propagation of incorrect terminology, its "baksheesh".

Many thanks. I use that term on occasion and won't mispronounce it in public now.

Ahh, the wisdom of pickle prince. Truly, a real life example of the proverbial blind pig finding himself at the base of an oak tree littered with acorns.

RobPicklesSmiley: smile was some guy who used to post in the OOT forums on the uBB. I think he came over to Forum=4 for a short time after the merger. He was way too friendly and , yes, signed his name with the smiley face.

Tacosid once told him no one would take him seriously until he started signing it RobPicklesSmiley: mad

No we both arrived just after ubb moved to the forums.

I used the EQ forum and introduced Dracoid.

He then discovered =4 and after much reluctance I hauled *** here and the door closed behind me.

Yeah, wasn't RobPickles involved in the television industry? I seem to recall he wrote scripts or was the gaffboy prime for such unforgettable shows like "Hope and Faith" and "Two Guys, a Girl, and a Pizza Place" or some such.

He used to drive people batty with his banal comments and indefatiguable joie de vivre.

It wasn't that. He was just... creepy.

Maybe I'm just a bitter cynic, but he was a little too touchy-feely for me. I always got a sort of Uriah Heep vibe from him, like his hands would be damp and he'd make way too much eye contact or something.

Hahahaha, the damp hands observation. I love it. Gosh, this is precisely what keeps me coming back to this board year after year after year. Awesome word picture.
