Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich (D) defeated Sen. Ted Stevens, ending the tenure of the longest-serving Republican in Senate history, after the counting of more ballots yesterday gave him a larger lead than the number of votes still untallied, Alaska elections officials said.

Begich leads Stevens by more than 3,700 votes, according to the Alaska secretary of state. Gail Fenumiai, the head of the state's election division, said about 2,500 absentee votes from overseas and Alaska's most remote regions remain to be counted.

The Democrat's lead thus far -- 47.8 percent to 46.6 percent -- puts him beyond the margin of victory that would allow Stevens to call for a state-funded recount of the ballots.
Not only does this help strengthen the Democratic majority in the Senate but it also denies Palin the chance to run in a special election for the seat. She'll have to wait until 2010 now to get out of Alaska.

Just leave a trail of expensive clothing and free food, she'll follow it like an ant colony follows breadcrumbs.

I was so going to post this when the story broke but I grew apathetic while copying the juicy bits from the politico story. I'm going to call right now that 60 is impossible. If I was a betting man, I would give very good odds on Chambliss in Georgia.

Franken's race still appears to be up in the air.

Possibly Democratic Senate +2.

Since the Chambliss race is Relevent To My Interests, here's my opinion on this:

In the worst redneckey parts of the state, there were plenty of people that turned out to vote for McCain that could give a rats *** about who their senator is. They don't trust anyone in the government; they just wanted to make sure a black man wasn't elected president if they could have it.

The Martin vs Chambliss race is missing a lot of that racial dynamic, which is good news for Martin. All but Chambliss' actual supporters are likely to stay home on the 2nd. He has a lot of supporters, of course, but so does Jim Martin. This race is going to be all about GOTV. And people in Georgia are generally apathetic about federal politics; all they care about is state or local. Representatives and Senators merely exist as a person to complain to when things aren't going their way.

All I can say is, I hope that Martin wins. My representative is Paul Broun, and if Chambliss wins again then I'm stuck with a rightwing nutjob and two rightwing @#%^s as my sum total representation on capital hill.

Holy Bob, how long does it take them to count votes up there in the Great White North anyhow?

From what I understand, it took a long while for a lot of the provisionals and absentees to be collected. Alaska is a very large place without a lot of people and many spots don't have road access. Then it took several days to actually count all of the ballots that needed hand counting.

I'm guessing it usually takes a while for a full vote count but, most cycles, you know the answer well before you're counting absentee ballots from Cicily.

Rather than seeking a recount (for a fairly minor $15,000 in campaign terms), Stevens has conceded the race. Begich is officially the next senator from Alaska.
