To celebrate the occassion, the SCotUS decided today that the US Navy's need to use sonar in their wargames trumped any potential damage the sonar was doing to whales & dolphins.

According to the book on the story, The Exploding Whale, and other Remarkable Stories from the Evening News, they should have used twice as much dynamite. They talked to a navy explosives expert after they tried to blow it up.

Reminds me of when the town of Wabush was being built and basements were being blasted out of bedrock.
Us pre-schoolers would be tootling around on our tricycles and the town siren would go off, prompting all the moms to get their kids indoors until the boom happened.
They used mats made of some kind of rubbery sheeting and old tires to muffle the blast and keep the rocks from flying around.
My mom claims they only started doing that when one charge was a bit overpowered and some rocks landed on the roof of the house.
Interesting times.

Anyways, hard to believe that those TNT jockeys could be so clueless about the use of dynamite, not even a berm of sand around the carcass or anything, like made for tv.
