Incredibly fun and cool game. Bethesda does RPGs very well.

Did you choose 360 or PC?

Is it anything like fallout 1/2 or is it just like "Oblivion with guns" like everyone keeps saying?

Is it good? I have it but haven't played it yet.

Oblivion with guns, it seems.

1 and 2 were RPGs, this is an FPS game that can be Turn Based. Kinda like Mass Effect for the 360, but without the pure FPS. (I wish Mass Effect was more RPG like it'd be perfect).

Not quite, the RPG aspect is VERY similar to the Fallout 2 themes. V.A.T.S. cinematic shooting makes me smile every time and puts a slight turn based aspect into it.

I agree, it's a fun game so far...when I have time getting around to play it. I actually picked up the PS3 version because it was a Collector's Edition (the X-Box 360 version was sold out). It looks amazing so far.

I read somewhere on the web (I think it was at Penny Arcade) that you will enjoy the game more by getting off the main quest path and just roam freely - if you stay on the main quest path the game will end rather abruptly, leaving you no time to really explore the world. So that's what I'm going to do...right after I pick up Gears of War 2 tomorrow!

That sucks. I really liked Oblivion but, I was really hoping it was more along the lines of 1 and 2.

How is leveling at least? Can you still do the niffty pick your own aspects type deal?

They're probably just scared of my thread over there because it contains spoilers.

I @#%^ing love this game. It boils down to Oblivion with guns, but it's just so polished (except 3rd person mode, feels kinda floaty, like you're hovering over the terrain.) I just love the atmosphere, and the post-apocalyptic theme. There are so many small details that really help tighten up the whole presentation.

Character creation feels less like simply doling out numeric bonuses thanks to the way they presented it. You skip through your life through adulthood, you're birthed, and you pick your gender and what your face is projected to look like when you grow up. You become a toddler, and read a book about stats, then you finally dole them out. Getting your pip-boy, picking skills, and finally getting out of the vault, the whole tutorial area is an absolute joy to play.

The little things that really get me are small touches, like sometimes, when you bring up the pip-boy menu, the screen rolls like an old television (nothing obtrusive, which is also awesome.) There's an icon for every@#%^ingthing, and they're pertinent, and often humorous. Seeing pip-boy's sad mug when you attempt something you can't accomplish is just icing on a perfectly baked cake.

If you're on the fence about this game, just get off already and buy the damn thing. I smell game of the year.

That's my first impression of the game. I still haven't beaten it, because I keep getting sidetracked in the Capital Wasteland. I didn't dig Oblivion that much, partially because a lot of their set pieces were very similar. Yes, there's a lot of repetition in Fallout 3 as well, but it's not nearly as apparent.

I'm having a blast, being a pious force of good, rallying my fellow wastelanders to build for a better future. It just feels epic. The immersion into the world is just stellar. Once I get sick of being a do-gooder, I know I'm really going to love starting over and becoming the callous devil that my black heart wants me to be. Then, after I've grown weary of slaving, thievery, murder, and whores, I will more than likely start anew, and become the path of least resistance zen master that floats through the slim neutrality of the wastes. There are reasons to maintain neutral karma, different quest rewards, different quest lines, different perks, and on.

I just can't say enough good about this game.

And don't listen to the people that complain that:

"You have to go through the Vault 101 pregame for every character!!!!"

Just like in Oblivion with the Caves. On your first play through, create a save point right before you exit. Upon exiting you can change your character. This creates a saved game where you can be what ever you want and skip the Vault stage (Just like in Oblivion)

Huh, I had Never thought of that, I just downloaded a mod that let you skip the entire sewers sequence.

I have owned a Xbox 360 for about 7 months now and this is the second game I have purchased with the first being GTAIV.

Typically I lose interest in massive open-ended games due to the shear size of the environment and the nearly infinite things you can do. That's just me for whatever reason.

That being said, I am absolutely 100% immersed in this game. I haven't made it very far. I am just past the Galaxy News Radio quest and am currently walking through the Tysons Corner area. I tend to get frustrated when I get lost and last night I turned it off feeling a bit overwhelmed. However, I will just head back to Megaton, sell my loot, sleep in my bed, and start afresh today.

The graphics and the environment are amazing. Like GTA IV, there is very little I can complain about here. Since I play it on a flat screen, 480 dpi, I can only wonder just how awesome it ould be on a 1080DPI screen. The sound is great. The radio stations (especially GNR) could use a bit more variety and I usually play the game with them turned off.

Storyline is not as complex as I thought it would be (At least not yet). Even the number of quests are slightly disappointing (Not enough of them IMO). I would prefer having a lot of small, side quests that allowed you to immerse yourself in the incredible surroundings.

For once, the stats you pick at the beginning actually make a huge difference in how you start off the game. You can rely heavily on gun skills (small or big) but then you can't have good sneak or barter abilities. You can have high intelligence for lockpicking but at the cost of strength. They did a really good job on the initial character development. I have re-started many times trying to build the character that I wanted to play.

One tip I will give is to invest heavily in the repair skill. Having a merchant repair your weapon is incredibly expensive and they can only repair it to 53% or something along those lines.

Caps (money) are difficult to come by. So is ammo. Use wisely. There is one part where you have to kill some fire ants and they gobble up ammo since you can;t get to close to them without getting toasted.

Awesome game, at least so far. I can't play creepy FPS games because they shoot my blood pressure through the roof (don't laugh, haha, I KNOW it's pathetic)...so I made Smash play it all weekend so I could watch with a pillow in front of me like it was a horror movie.

You wouldn't think it was cute if it was *you* trying to play a creepy video game and the person next to you kept screaming and scaring the crap out of you. I know there are people that think I must be a saint for dating him, but you've NO idea what he puts up with.

To this point, the only thing I would have to whine about is the same issue I had with Morrowind: The oppressive gray and sepia tones begin to wear on you after a while and you desperately wish to see something, anything that has some bright color in it.

Otherwise I am having a blzst with this game.

I don't know about Morrowind, but for a post-apocalyptic game, gray, sepia, and the green glow of radiation is a perfect fit.

One unexpected bonus is the Galaxy News Radio station, I keep it turned on all the time and I find myself humming Bing Crosby tunes while at work.
Three Dog is entertaining, I love the news that reflect your character's advancement (side quests as well as main quest), rumors that point out some interesting places to visit, and other tidbits of wasteland survival advice.

They need to work on the food thingy... Having 260 hp and eating a piece of dog meat gives you +5 hp and 2 rads. That's a lot of dogmeat and radiation to work your way up to full health.

Played it a solid 2 hours last night. It was dark and I was crawling around the metro. There were a few times I was scared ********* The experience was awesome! My wife keep asking me if everything was alright. Plus, I was all out of beer IRL. Can't remember the last time a game kept me so interested for that long being completly sober. Amazing.

I'm loving this game right now. The only gripe I have is that the mouse sensitivity is way too low in menus compared to what I have it set to, which was a problem in Oblivion, too. Tad hard to aim, too, but that would be why they have VATS.
