Barack Obama's decision to name Illinois Rep. Rahm Emanuel as his chief of staff ensures that myriad profiles of the man they call "Rahmbo" will be written in the days and weeks to come.

I'd have preferred him as Senator Emanuel, but clearly Obama thinks he has a mandate and wants to get things done. It's a close to ideal pairing, really, Obama, the cool considered leader who sends Emanuel after you to destroy your career and life if you don't deliver.

I think of this pairing as similar to the Kevin Costner, Sean Connery duo in "The Untouchables" Emanuel is Connery, obviously.

The GOP's response?

John Boehner, the Republican minority leader in the House quickly issued a statement about his long-time adversary's appointment.

"This is an ironic choice for a president-elect who has promised to change Washington, make politics more civil, and govern from the center," Boehner said in a statement.

The President Elect's response to the GOP?

"Yeah, well you're not from Chicago."

Junior Senator from Illinois would have probably been a step down for the guy. He'd have been better off staying in the House and angling for Speaker one of these days. Plus, there's no reason to assume Blagojevich would have considered him for the job.

I'm happy with the choice. Which means that the Republicans must be pissed about it Smiley: laugh

What's the feeling locally about that? Pretty much JJJ almost for certain or is Blagojevich crazy enough to appoint himself?

To be fair to them, he is the last guy you'd pick if reaching across the isle was your goal. On the other hand if you were picking someone who would hold a grudge for 50 years if you filibustered something on his agenda...ideal.

I haven't heard too much about it. If I was to pick a card out of a hat, it'd be JJJ. If I had to pick a favorite darkhorse, it'd be Tammy Duckworth. I'm almost certain it wouldn't be Attorney General Lisa Madigan (who everyone loves but Blagojevich hates) or Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias (who Blagojevich loves but everyone else hat-- well, maybe not hates but no one especially likes him). Blagojevich isn't going to appoint himself. It's a cute idea that it could happen but I honestly don't see it happening.

Pretty much my exact thoughts.

In my mind, it also shows the Congressional Dems that Obama isn't going to happily jump into their collective pocket and go along with every* whacko far-left piece of legislation that they try to force through.

*Although he'll certainly be on board for a few, but that's to be expected.

Same thing that happened with clinton in 92/93' and allowed the Repubs to rally back in 94'. What's sad, really sad, neither the democrats NOR the republicans ever learn from history.

So, is this a Rendezvous with Rahm-a? By Arthur C Clarke?

I get the idea that Obama will do the reaching across the aisle, while Rahm is there to keep the disparate factions of the Democratic party on the same track. Not that I actually know anything about it, I'm just parroting NPR.

I'd put my money on Jindal/Palin before Palin/anybody. If Ronald Reagan came back from the dead and was Palin's running mate, she still couldn't get elected.

Pretty much. Emanuel's job is to keep the machinery moving and to get crap done. He's perfect for the role. People don't always "like" him but you can't deny that he's effective at the nuts & bolts of it.

Also, I think this means the "Obama will abandon Israel!" canard can be put to rest.

Edit: I keep being tempted to type "Rahm" which is much easier to clatter out than "Emanuel". But I suppose he and I aren't on a first name basis.

I think Obama wants to seem more pro-Israel than some people perceive him as-- that's how he's reaching across the aisle.

Arguably, he's there more to keep the Democrats in line than the Republicans.

Yeah. Look at how far being the most filibuster-happy senate in US history got you in this election.

This isn't a smart choice at all for Barack.
I wish I had a dime for every time a Pubbie said that Obama was making a big mistake since July '07. I'd probably have a pretty nice pile of dimes right now.

Is anyone else somewhat perturbed that this Rahm Emanuel guy lost his middle finger by sliceing it off whilst working at a fast food restaraunt, and then rather than go to the hospital to try and have it reattached, he immidiatly wen't swimming in sime slightly unsanitary water, causing it to get gangrene... That does not exactly speak highly of his dexterity and common sense. And yes, i realize it was 20 years ago, but still...

So now we have Obamalamadingdong and Rahmalamadingdong. If they get a soundtrack and some choreographed dance moves they could do Motown...

It goes to show how far he'll go to be bi-partisan. He went and lopped off his birdie finger so he could never be tempted to FU the opposition. He's a uniter, not a divider!
