So Obama has selected Rahm Emanuel as his chief of staff. He's the guy who was the inspiration for the Bradley Whitford character on The West Wing.

What do you think? Too many ties to the Clintons? Too mean-spirited or severe? Or does he add the chops that some feel Obama lacks?

Word is he may not accept the offer, as he's currently the 4th ranking Democrat in the House.

Nah, the cabinet is going to be made up solely of Oprah Winfrey, Bill Maher, Bill Ayers and Jerimiah Wright.

Obviously.

You forgot him having that PLO member for foreign relations and hiring his covered-up honey-bun down in the Caribbean as a secretary.

Rahm's a tough biscuit of a politican and has commanded the DCCC pretty well. I think he'd do well in the position but, as you mention, he'd be giving up a pretty plum spot in the House to do it. I remember hearing the same thing about the empty IL senate seat; Rahm would do well there but it'd actually be a step down in power for him. Chief of Staff would carry significant power but I don't know how it'd mesh with Emanuel's ambitions.

Let's see who he picks for his cabinet. I'm going to have to say it's going to be at least 70% left democrats, after all MoveOn gave him 85+ Million and they want some payback!

ArmorTonight, how many Dems did Bush have in his cabinet?

Cite and list sources, please. And percentages and totals.

When you elect a president, you also elect an administration. Them's the breaks. Obama is allowed to pick the person he thinks will best handle the rest of his staff, not the person that appeases the losing party the most. If that were the case, he'd be asking Mitt Romney to be his Secretary of the Treasury.

Which probably wouldn't be a bad idea anyway.

I gave Obama a few hundred bucks since Jan 1. I'm hoping for an ambassadorship.

Back in December or so I was reading one of the news magazines and they had a piece on the 2nd & 3rd tier candidates. The photo at the top of the page was Mike Gravel speaking to a group of seniors in a nursing home. He was addressing a half ring of perhaps 10 seats -- about 1/3rd of which were empty.

I felt bad for the guy.

BBC reports that Rahm Emanuel has accepted Obama's offer.

Cool. Emanuel's a tough, take-no-crap kind of guy with a crapload of experience. He's the guy who masterminded the Democratic take-over of the House in 2006 and its expanded lead in 2008. He also came up with the plan to actively encourage centrist Democrats and conservative 'Blue Dog' Democrats to run for the House to expand the Democratic umbrella.

Pubbies on the Hill can whine and ***** all they want about it. They'd be whining and ******** no matter who Obama picked. Emanuel's a good pick.
