Race really didn't matter, your attributing it to that is quaint though.
You have a Republican party still realing from losing the house/senate a while back, a hamstrung president with 26% approval ratings. Whoever was going to run was probably going to be a lame duck candidate of a party with deep rifts between its fiscal conservatives, evangelical right and beyond. Not to mention living out the half life of a number of scandals involving hot man on man pink elephant homosexuality. It is not like Bush sr walking into an election with Reagan handing it to him. The McCain camp made numerous mistakes, focusing on security in the face of a economic crisis, the vetting and handling of Palin, inability to motivate their base etc. On the flip side the Dems nominated Barack and not the much pubbie hoped for Clinton (who would have polarized the fractured right behind a somewhat unpopular McCain).
So we got Obama and what ******* breath of fresh air he is going to be. If you are too blinded by party rhetoric, the ignorant rambling of your fellow slack jawed yokels or the inability to understand complex situations well then that is your problem for the next four years as you allow blind prejudice to skew your entire view of the situation. Allow me to get a pre-emptive and juvenile 'nyah nyah' in. I can only hope that time proves me as right on Obama as it did on Bush back in 2001.
