How much do I love Oregon's Vote By Mail system?

We actually received our ballots a few weeks ago, but I really procrastinated on researching some of the Congressional candidates and ballot measures, so we missed the deadline for mailing them in. Therefore, my job this morning was to drop off our ballots at one of the drop locations.

Which was about 2 miles from our house. Had I been feeling more ambitious, Tristan and I could have taken a nice walk to get there.

It was set up in the parking lot of the nearby K-mart, just a bearded old guy standing under a tent-like awning with a local news van broadcasting the scene nearby. There were cones (eerily remiscent of Drivers Ed in high school) set up to direct traffic through the parking lot to the right spot, and you just buzzed through, handed the old guy your envelope, and went on your merry way. No polls, no lines, no hanging chads or miscalibrated voting machines to worry about. I did have to wait for a couple cycles of the light at the intersection because traffic was heavy, but I think that was due more to it being rush hour (I went at 8:30) than the drop site.

This is how our whole state votes. Why, oh WHY, don't more states adopt this system? It's so absurdly LOGICAL and works so smoothly, why on earth would anyone do it any other way? No worrying about finding daycare for the kids so you can stand in line at the polling site where your voter registration may or may not be validated and where your vote may or may not count due to technical problems. It's just brilliant.

Tristan and I dropped off the ballots, then went and celebrated with Jamba Juice, passing a guy with a "Honk For Obama" sign on the way out of the parking lot. Damn straight I honked!

Colorado does it, but for some reason I was never mailed my ballot. However, we've also had early voting the last 2 weeks, so I did that in stead. About a week ago I read in the paper that approximately 25% of the registered voters in my county had already voted. I'm not sure how many the final number was up to before today.

*Edit* Checking out the paper on-line today, it says the majority of registered voters voted early or by mail-in, but doesn't give an exact percentage.

Mail-in voting is nice unless you live here in Colorado where they fail to send out ballots to several thousand people every election.

Well I picked up the wife and kidlet earlier this afternoon, found the right fire station (Jackson Ladder Co. not Jackson Engine Co.) and cast my ballot. I liked the sound of the Working Families party (especially since it mirrors the Democratic Party) but my wife couldn't vote since the DMV fuCked up her registration when she went to change her address.

It was cool, though, when all the grandfolk manning the polling station cooed over Thom.
