Judges!

If your state votes for circuit and appellate court judges, that is.

And since nobody knows what the hell any of them are doing, find your newspaper's endorsement page. They review evaluations from bar associations, as well as other sources. It's the only position where I just vote for exactly what the newspaper (liberal media!) tells me.

The League of Women Voters prepare a brief question and answer interview for most candidates in many states. If you don't trust your local paper's voting section then this is a decent alternative or supplement.

We don't elect judges in the Chusetts, but we do have three ballot initiatives. I'll be voting against repealing the state income tax, in favor of decriminalizing reefer, and in favor of banning dog racing. Not because I like dogs, fuck dogs, but for the chance they mighty convert Wonderland into a poker room.

I assume there are several districts with a Proposition K - the numbers are statewide, letters are local.

In San Francisco, Prop K this time around is to decriminalize prostitution. Is that what you're curious about? I'll be voting for it. It has little to no chance to pass.

No, I meant the one to issue municipal bonds in Mendocino to build a new Football Field for the Jr High. Why would I be interested in one involving hookers? What do you take me for?

Ah, hookers and football fields. They're a natural pairing.

I'm still undecided on whether or not Illinois should hold a constitutional convention. Pretty sure I'm voting "Yes" for the local community college to issue bonds to help pay for expansion. Those are the only two ballot initatives in my neck of the woods.

I know the Tribune has one of those ballot walk-throughs where it displays the candidates answers to the paper's questionnaire. I should probaby brsh up tonight. I'd hate to tragically vote for the poorer choice in county coroner.

I'm unsure if doing this would make Wonderland any less depressing.

Wonderland is pretty pitiful. I seriously doubt they would convert it to a poker room though. Maybe a slot machines...

I am voting against banning dog racing for a three reasons. First, a lot of the people who work at the track as well as people who provide services for the track (i.e. food delivery) would lose there jobs. Second, the state would lose more tax revenue. Lastly, betting on dogs was once of my only sources of income in college...its time to return the favor.

As for repealing the state income tax, I am with Smash on this one (I can't believe I said that). Although I do beleive that the Massachusetts Gov't wastes money more than any other state, eliminating the state income tax is too risky. I don't need my son in a classroom of 70.

I am also voting yes on decriminalizing pot. It is a serious waste of judicial resources. Besides, if some stupid kid gets caught with pot at 18 he/she has that permanently on their record and can lose eligibility for student loans etc...hey its not crack.

It's not even whiskey or Bicardi 151 either, and they're legal.

I wish I could corner a politician into having that discussion with me, I see it going something like this:

Me: Hello, PoliticianMan
PM: Hello
Me: So, why are you against marijuana legalization?
PM: Well, it's a gateway drug, and it's harmful to our youth
Me: Hmmm...true, but so is alcohol; is that next up on your agenda to criminalize?
PM: Interview over.

But in all honesty, I'd rather have it decriminalized than totally made legal. If it was legal, the gov't would be charging like 500$ an ounce for mersh. It would be nice to be able to just pop down to 7/11 and grab some though instead of the usual hooplah.

Not really, it would be cheaper than it is today, even with all the taxes included. Weed is dirt cheap to produce, and can be grown anywhere in the world. In fact, it is grown pretty much everywhere in the world. The Netherlands is the best exemple, it's incredibly cheap over there, and the quality is the best there is.

What makes weed slightly expensive is the fact that it's illegal. Same for all illegal drugs. A kilo of cocaine in Columbia costs around $600. On the US streets, it retails for about $100,000. That's a hefty mark-up.

I'm all for the decriminilisation of drugs, and I think pretty much all drugs should be legalised as controlled substances, with all the regulation this implies. But I don't think I'll see it in my lifetime.

Around 5-15€ a gram depending on which shop and flavor/strain you choose. Not dirt cheap, but a helluva bit cheaper than the $50/3.5grams I pay here. Also, I never know exactly what I'm getting.

Remember potties, it's legalization we want, not decriminalization. It's a step in the right direction, but means fuckall when you're a careful toker.

Consumption of cannabis went down in the Netherlands a few years after it was legalised. That's including the thousands of tourists that come from all over the world to smoke pot in Amsterdam.

To be fair, cannabis consumption went down in most of Western Europe from about 1998 onwards, so those two factors might not be directly linked. But still, it shows at the very least that legalising something doesn't necessarily entail an increase in consumption.

lawlz, the refeer debate makes it's election day appearance - it's MADNESS!!

Putting judges on a ballot is scary business.

Maines ballot questions are;

1. Casino's - again. I'll probably vote 'No' again, though my justification for doing so is not as credible as I'd like.
2. Repeal a tax used for our in-state public health insurance program 'Dirigo'. The program came into existance 3 or 4 years ago I believe, but thus far as not had the numbers join up that are needed to see the savings on drugs and services that had been anticipated. - I'll vote 'No'.
3. Bond for moneies for drinking water cleanliness and security - I'll vote 'Yes'

Even scarier when it's State Supreme Court Justices like we do in Wisconsin. Talk about messy elections. Smiley: oyvey

The papers here generally do a passable job of writing up an opinion/recommendation on the judges as well. I also go a lot by the bluebook that comes out. I figure if any of the DA's or defenders recommend against re-electing a judge, that's a pretty good indicator.
