It's his father's half-sister. My father has a half-brother that I've never met, and I don't know where he lives, if he's in this country, or if he's even alive. I doubt my father knows either.

I also have cousins, first cousins, that I know nothing about, despite the fact that we used to be fairly close when we were younger.

/Protip: a lot of us don't keep in touch with anyone other than immediate family.

I found out 6 weeks ago that I had an aunt who died in the 80s. :/

I was close to all of my cousins as a kid. Then when I was 12 I found out I had three cousins and an aunt (their mother) who I'd never even heard of that lived in California.

That sounds like my family.

Mom: "Remember I told you Hazel has cancer?"
Me: "Who's Hazel??"
Mom: "Well anyway, he's been dead for about 6 years now."

I had a Grandmother that died in the mid-90s that I never met and didn't know where she was until about a week after she died.

OK, now that's just denying common sense. Your mother or dad's sister is from another country but lives in this country for 4 years and you never find out, not once? Possible, but highly unlikely.

I have nothing to do with my extended family.

I had a great-great-great grandfather that was a horse thief. Guess I can't run for office.

Hardly a compelling defense, considering you're likely the black sheep.

I wonder if Obama talks to any of his Kenyan family considering he never really knew them. Why wouldn't it be surprising? You just grew up in an apparently intact family and can't imagine anything otherwise.

I live 4 houses up from mt brother, i see him once every 3-4 weeks. I work in the same office as my father and see him once a month. Of my parents 8 siblings, 6 live within 20 minutes of me and I haven't seen any in the last 4 months. I'm not exactly your model citizen for keeping in touch with family and yet I know where my mom's half sister lives. I just took it for granted that most people were better at keeping up with their families than I was.

I @#%^ing hate when I have to agree with Anna, thanks a sh*t ton Squatch.

I rarely speak with my family on my fathers side (save for one uncle out of 13) and couldn't tell you where any of them are or what they are doing. Just not important consdering I didn't grow up with them in my life.

I would suspect extended family for Obama, especially from another continent, might not be a high priority.

I'd have thought that someone who's in the middle of a high profile election would make it a point to know what's going on with his family to remove the chance of any embarrassing details coming out, especially knowing the other side's desperation.

See, you probably like and even get along with your family. With the exception of my parents, the rest of my family is annoying, a waste of space, or MIA and no one knows/cares where they are.

If my sister dropped off tomorrow, I wouldn't bat an eye.

Well, I like my parents. I tolerate my brother. My aunts and uncles kinda fall somewhere in between.

Except he obviously did know this aunt. He mentioned her in one of his books. He invited her to attend his swearing in ceremony as a US Senator. While we can't assume he had any involvement in or knowledge of her subsequent failure to leave the country when her visa expired, it's a bit "odd" that he was completely unaware. She's been living in the country for 4 years and he's never talked to her or bothered to follow up on her?

The more significant issue is that she's here illegally yet somehow also living on the public dole. It calls to question the competence of the government with regard to welfare programs. If it can't figure out that a relative of a forerunner for the highest office is here illegally and shouldn't be receiving taxpayer funded benefits, how exactly are we supposed to trust it at all?

Yet Obama wants to expand the scope of the government in this area...

Why not? That kind of thing happens on TV shows all the time so it must be realistic, rite?

I hardly know jack about my dad's family, anyways... nor do I really care.

To be fair, so do most Democrats, it isn't a desire only inherent to Obama.

Dude, that's what we've been saying for the last 8 years Smiley: rolleyes

And you know what? Obama is promising "Change" from that government. If you haven't voted early, it's not too late...

You're being sarcastic, right?

The "Change" Obama is pushing is more of that sort of government spending. Not less.

Of course not, I'm totally serious. We all know you're an Obama fan deep inside, you just won't admit it in public.

It's ok, we understand.

And?

Actually, he said he spoke to her two years ago when she called him one time. He last saw her four years ago at his Senate confirmation. I'm not sure what's so strange about this. Do you think she called him one day and said "Guess what! I'm here illegally! Hahahah!" Do you think he has his guys rifle through her files? If she said she was on a visa before, it's not a far-fetched assumption that he figures she was still on a legal visa.

Really, I take the facts of the matter as a pretty good suggestion that Obama didn't know. If he did know, it stands to reason that a lawyer and senator could attempted to make things right well ahead of time. Like two years ago when he last spoke to her.
