I dunno..I might have lost touch with ol' auntie Z from Kenya if I was busy doing things like being a Senator or running for President of the United States.
It's possible he didn't know her whereabouts or what was going on with her. It's not like they were extremely close or anything. There's plenty of people out there with aunts and uncles living in other countries who wouldn't know what was going on with them, and they're not running for President.

Pretty sure he was in touch with her at least indirectly since he mentioned her in a book. Dunno if he were aware that she's illegal, though. She sought asylum however many years ago.

Campaign response is that she is his aunt, Obama had no knowledge of her status, he last spoke to her some two years ago when she called to say she was in boston and last saw her was in 2004 when she was in the country legally on a tourist visa. Obama had no role in her obtaining her visas.

Within the law is a phrase you seem to be omitting. Is he hypocritical for not asking citizens to literally steal from the rich and give to the poor?

I didn't grow up knowing my father's family either. I met them all once. It's not really in my sphere of things to think about them at all. That's not hate, that's just the reality that you define family by who is present in your life. I don't think Obama is any different in that than anyone. You can characterize him, purely for some type of weird partisan argument but it's bizarre to talk about some imagined antipathy towards his aunt as an issue for a candidate for the presidency.

In 2004. She was there visiting on a tourist visa which she attained herself. If she was able to get a visa and an airline ticket from Kenya (currently in the $1500 range, round trip in economy), she obviously wasn't living on $1 a month.
