Anyone who has taken any basic science class knows that fruit flies are extremely important for genetic research. They live, breed and die in a single day, letting you study generations of potential mutations in mere months. So Sara Palin is giving her big policy speech where she claims she wants to advance the fight against autism. How will she pay for it? Cutting earmarks for silly things like some grant to study fruit flies. The problem is that specific earmark she mentioned actually led to a breakthrough in the study of, of all things, autism.

I used to think she was just uninformed but not really dumb. I've changed my mind. She makes George Bush look like Stephen Hawkings.

She has a lot of populist appeal because she (apparently) sees things the way most people do: about one layer deep.

Yeah, but she looks good doing it-- which is far more than you can say for Nancy Pelosi, Hillary Clinton, and all the other females in government. Because you know, we don't care what a woman has to say, we just want to stare at her breasts.

First they came for the fruitfly research grants, and I said nothing because who cares about silly fruit flies?

Then they came for the maggot research, and again, I said nothing for maggots are smelly.

Then they came for the anti-spider research, and it was too late for there was no one left to speak up for me!

I thought you were in the wombat demographic? That they'd have to eliminate the platypus crowd first so then there'd be no webbed-footed mammals to speak up for you. Or am I getting you confused with the echidna?

Well, Alla, you'll be glad to see President Bush and Mr. Hawkings now have something in common beside their brilliant minds and difficulty speaking.

Also, fruit flies are a good indicator of a restaurant with poor hygiene and low standards.

Somehow, Mr Allakhazam has found a good metaphor.

I never knew he was right wing until a few weeks ago, as nearly every article I've read from him was about religion. In any regard, it's refreshing to read someone criticize religion as bluntly as he does.

Edit: upon further research, I can't find evidence that he is all that right-wing, except for a few issues. But I had heard someone else recently refer to him as such. Whatever.

He's always seemed to be a pretty scathing liberal, but he went mad and supported Bush's invasion of Iraq for a while. Once that turned to pooh, he seems to have gone back to ridiculing people and their religeous beliefs.

He said :

Quote:
"I'm not even an atheist so much as I am an antitheist; I not only maintain that all religions are versions of the same untruth, but I hold that the influence of churches, and the effect of religious belief, is positively harmful."

Wich about sums up my opinion of religeon and explains my extreme dislike of Sarah Palin.

Here is Christopher Hitchens talking about Iran, fairly conservative I'd say. The only reason he is supporting Obama right now is because the Republican nominees are absolute crap, but he himself is a neo-con.

I think if McCain had a better VP choice I would have considered him. But I really don't like the idea of Palin. Milf + Hot daughter isn't necessarily enough for me to vote for her.

I'm missing an awful lot of my childhood memories. But I remember about 20 Marx Brothers movies from Summer school holidays. The only ever bad thing in them was the dopey 4th brother who turned up later. But I loved that battle-axe woman who turned up in a lot of them.

This is apparently the legislation that Palin was referring too. Citizen's Against Governmental Waste (CAGW) targetted the bill earlier this year as being porkful by awarding it's sponsor the "French Kiss off Award". Reportedly, CAGW never contacted the rep to actually learn about it's necessity (or lack of it).

I believe CAGW is funded by the government as well......

Palin is a hardcore anti-intellectual. I get the impression she thought college was a monumental waste of time, considering it took her five years and six schools to eke out a BA in Communications. Her son and her soon-to-be son-in-law are both high school dropouts. Her daughter showed no inkling of college prep plans, and Palin showed no encouragement to her to pursue a degree even being teen-pregnant. And her kids have been with her on the campaign trail constantly (compared to the Obama kids, who have been with their grandmother or Michelle for much of the fall.)

I'd like her more if she wasn't so goddamn stuck on stupid. My parents worked and scraped to go to college on the GI Bill with three kids, and encouraged me to go to whatever college I could get into. My dad was thrilled when I got into UGA (since none of my sisters had even bothered to try), but there was always this expectation that I'd go to college or die trying.

I guess if all you need to know is how to field dress a moose to be Governor, then you view college with a bit of disdain as lost years.
