was having a conversation with a right wing friend of mine about energy. in one breath he says we should have a totally free market. that government should stay out of restricting where oil companies could drill, or where nuclear facilities should be built. even going as far that implying that those restrictions are why we are dependant on foreign oil.

so i asked him, who should pay for, store, and guard spent nuclear fuel rods to keep them out of the hands of terrorist? and i asked him who will stop american oil companies in alaska from selling all that oil over seas instead of right here in our country?

his answer, the government.

every country is socialist. all of them. communist, patriarchal, democratic, it doesnt matter.

it is just a matter of how much the government controlls. you can not have a government without some form of socialism.

can we count on business owners and citizens to build, maintain, and train our army? can we count on the private sector to build and maintain our streets? how about education? water and sewer? local police and fire?

to me it occurs the republican argument against socialism comes down to earnings and not necessarily the perks we enjoy from socialist programs. to me it occurs that as a group they want to pick and choose which socialist agendas they want to keep and which they want to do away with.

both the repubs and the dems are advocates of socialism. the repubs are just using the word to deamonize the dem socialist agendas, and the dems are just **** poor at throwing it back in their face.

and the tools that swallow the republican mantra without thinking it through are just that, tools.

it isnt an issue about socialism as much as it is an issue about whose socialist agenda they prefer. we need govenment. all forms of government are socialist. government is socialist by nature. any time a single body of people gather to determine the path of the many it is socialism. controll. laws are a form of socialsm.

why are the dems letting the repubs throw this word around as if it is first, bad, and second, totally belonging to liberals?

You have a brilliant political mind and are the first person to conceive of this notion.
