Foreign nationals cannot contribute to campaigns for Federal office. Smiley: schooled

Cite? Oh wait, you can't, because you pulled it out of your ***. I think you may have mistaken Obama for your hero Bush, who actually calls a member of the Bin Laden clan an honorary member of his own family.

I'm less amused by Varrus's claims of Saudi money than by the fact that he called "Where is Obama's money coming from?" a strawman.

Which is absolutely true but probably not what he intended.

I agree, that was amusing, but really Virus's flub works on any number of levels. Flinging accusations of association with Saudi royalty is just hugely ironic in light of the acknowledged close Bush family ties to the Saudis.

Nope. Because campaigners don't control who sends them funds, only what they do with them. Smiley: schooled

Given that both Kerry & Bush used public funding and Obama relied solely on private donation, this isn't exactly a damning stat.

Well, in all fairness, wouldn't you make a big deal about it if McCain had 2 million from some unknown entity? If the candidate has their hands that deep in someone's pocket, they are going to be following them around where ever they want to go.

Not saying that Obama's money is wrong, just that it does matter where it is coming from.

You know, some Americans DO live abroad. I have some friends doing JET in Japan that funneled about $50 each to the Obama campaign, because of McCain wins they're probably going to renew their JET contracts again and again and again until he and Palin are gone.

I wonder, how many Americans are working for the private contractors in Iraq, for that matter? Wasn't it around 100,000 or so? Actually, I think we just found out where McCain's overseas campaign contributions came from.

(That, and he's apparently been asking Russian nationals for cash.)

Unknown to who? The FEC handles the detective work on this. And, yes, both campaigns have already called on the FEC to investigate the other guy. When the FEC actually finds something shady, let me know.

I wasn't saying that these particular funds, from either candidate, are questionable. Just that it does matter who gave them.

I'm saying that they're not "unknown", though. They might be unknown to you (in the general sense) but it's not as though the campaigns fill out their reports with "$2,000,000 donated via large sack with dollar sign on it".

You wouldn't want to know where your candidate was getting his/her money from? Like the CEO of a large oil producing company that wished to drill in the middle of a pond filled with near extinct baby ducks. You wouldn't want to unintentionally vote for a person who had their hands into something evil that would come back and control them later.

They may know who the contributors are. But if you the voter doesn't, then how do you know if a person who may have the ability to pull the strings has the same views as you?

So what are you asking for, exactly? Corporate donations are already public and tightly controlled. Do you want every individual who has contributed to be named, along with the dollar amount?

Would you really read that list and look up the occupations of the people on it?

If the individual has donated over $200, they're already named and on publicly available lists.

People whose total donations are under $200 aren't available although they are tracked (hence the FEC knows when to publish them).
