Who did you cast a vote for and why?

Do you realize that Canada is one of the tougher countries to immigrate to, unless you hire an immigration lawyer. Effectively, you need to have family already here (and this only means it takes 2 years instead of never) or lots of money. If you had lots of money, you wouldn't be running from McCain.

It doesn't matter. There is a smattering of people who say things like this almost every election. I've yet to see anyone actually act on it.

Give up if you don't agree totally with what they think then they will sit there and make jokes while avoiding your thoughts on the matter.

Shush. I like destroying hope before it can truly go anywhere.

Assuming you have thoughts on the matter and aren't just making little *peep* sounds for attention, we'll usually respond at least once.

If I had lots of money I would have moved in 2004 when Bush was re-elected. I did look into emigrating to Canada then and I figured that I could do it. The requirements may have changed but from what I understood I could live on a work visa for a few years and then apply for citizenship? I haven't looked at it recently. I do have a degree and good work experience.

New Zealand and other European countries look swell.

If McCain wins I think at this point it would be very obvious it was a stolen election. This wouldn't be the first time. With the unconstitutional power grab of civil liberties and the radical agenda of both McCain and Palin, we would be one major disaster away from police state, 1984. There are bills being debated before Congress right now that give federal authorities the right to spy on citizens and use the evidence to prosecute domestic cases without a warrant from a judge and without speculation that they are involved in terrorism. On top of that the President now has a right to declare something a disaster and enforce martial law, and they have the forces already prepared to act in case this happens (Northcom). Right now we are building huge detainment camps in the desert and there has not been a clear explanation why.

So, a police state with either a malleable and senile old man caving to special interests and bullying, or a religious fanatic who thinks the end of the world is on the horizon and thinks that 'perhaps' we need to go to war with Russia. No thanks.

There is the work Visa option, but I think you need to have a skill set not easily replaced by a Canadian to guarantee that you get one. Hint: Move to Alberta and claim to have a trade.

I find it ironic and funny that you'd want to leave America because it's becoming a police state and you want to go to Canada.

I answered his question quite seriously. Others did as well.

Persecution isn't a pretty color on you.

This is based solely on a trip I took when I was 13 and things I have heard. Is it too becoming a police state? Surely it couldn't be as bad as the US is becoming?

No. We still get our privacy protected, but everything, and I truly do mean everything, is regulated. We're not a police state, we're just not allowed any individual thought.

An over protective nanny. Sure, you can do whatever you want, but you need to wear a helmet, and knee pads, and elbow pads. Don't forget the training wheels. Oh and don't go down hills.

Got any Guantanamo Bays? Enhanced interrogation techniques? Proxy wars for oil? I'd rather have a nanny that was overprotective than one that molested and abused me.

I, for one, think America needs a strong leader. Someone who'll make the country great again. Someone who's not afraid to cancel foreign debt or eliminate enemies with military force. Someone who will act to rid the country of undesirable elements. Someone to stand up and declare "I AM THE FUHRER".

Vote John McCain '08.

I still have this lingering nightmare that G-dub is gonna declare himself emperor one of these days, and start a goose-stepping army a-marching across the nation.

We still have from Nov. - Jan. if McCain loses.

I had a really lucid dream the other night that the closest major city got nuked. I could see and hear the mushroom cloud go up and everything. Then everyone was gearing up for a major war. We started preparing our battleships. My friends started joining the military and wearing SWAT-like uniforms and were checking people to make sure they wren't terrorists.

A psychologist might have some fun with this, but it did scare me and had quiet an impact on me to actually see a US city get nuked.

Move to the West. All the winds across NA flow north east and there's nothing in British Columbia worth nuking.

When I was a kid, back in the days of the Soviet Cold War and "The Day After", we used to make lists of why we'd be the first to die in a nuclear strike with Chicago being an obvious first strike target.

I got in trouble for telling a teacher that ducking and covering was just stupid. To be fair, we'd just seen a film including shots of Hiroshima in the aftermath. "Duck and cover" looked pretty friggin' lame.

I grew up in an Official New York City Fallout Shelter. Smiley: schooled Well, a fallout shelter that had been converted in to a basement apartment in the late 1970s, to be technical.

As of 1996, the sign on the building designating the safe haven from radiation that lied within was still attached to the outside wall. For those of you who've never been to NYC or have never seen such a sign, here's a sample:

They're still pretty common everywhere in town.

They have those in lots of places, like where I grew up, we had one in school with the same sign. We were near one of the biggest targets, esp. if you believed Wargames, in the event of nuclear war. There used to be that idea that if you were within 30 miles of a nuclear blast, you'd vaporize instantly. I remember wishing I lived closer to the airbase.

I think I'm actually going to vote this year, too. i filled out my voter registration (thanks to Joph and the link in his sig) and got my voter registration card the other day. I just don't know how to go about actually voting...do you go into one of those shower-stall booths and pull the lever on the big machine? Like a slot machine? That's all I remember from our elementary school pseudo-voting experience.
