I noticed McCain looked exhausted. At one point, he even had a slight tremor.

Is anyone talking about how Schieffer didn't shake Obama's hand at the end?

According to Obama's tax calculator, I'd see a nearly $1,800 savings with Obama and a $60 savings with McCain.

Winner! Smiley: laugh

You do know that 40% of Americans pay no taxes at all. Obama wants to increase the tax on businesses to GIVE that money to those who PAY NO TAXES at all and call it a "Tax cut". That's not a tax cut, that is an entitlement, giving money away.

It's called infrastructure, education, and health-care. The latter two have been put on the back burner for too long.

My views. I guess I'm the evil socialist boogeyman. I WANT YOUR MONEY!!!

I go to college full time and work 35-40 hours a week. I pay too much for health insurance. If I go to the hospital for a needed surgery, a 5000 tax credit isn't going to cover it--who's going to pay for that credit by the way? I fully support the idea of universal healthcare. How do we do it? Slash the defense budget.

I'm a pot smoking, deer hunting--yes I live in Madison; a stones throw away from you (shudder)--video game playing, well read, 26 year young male. I bet you voted for that sleazebag Tim Michels when he ran against Feingold. I bet you alos voted for those fucking asshats, Ziegler and Michaels for SSC. God you're a fucking douchebag. Smiley: lol

See how I do that?

EDIT: Oops, you were talking to Joph.

Why not do a little more research and find how that breaks down by income bracket?

I'd venture a guess that 95% of the working Americans who don't pay taxes are either in the bottom 20% or the top 20% - at roughly equivalent proportions in each...

For what it's worth, $26,000/year before taxes nets me an annual tax bill of about $50 beyond what's been taken out of my paycheck - or about $1900.

If capitalism didn't work, we would have changed at sometime within the last 225 years don't you think?

Europe's economy is horrible. Look at all their economic growth factors, and you will see they are STAGNANT or DECLINING. This is undeniable, it is statistics.

Why do you think European military power has declined so dramatically they are afraid to confront anyone? They are doing the same things that precluded WWII. You can't let Iran and NK just run amok and do as they please. Diplomacy is always the first line, but if that doesn't work (Which doesn't with dictators) then you have to move ahead with sanctions and if that doesn't work and they continue then you have to take out their facilities that are capable of producing those weapons. It's not the pretty picture we all want to happen, but its reality, its history. I have no faith with Obama as our commander in chief. I am in the military albeit not a combat oriented part (US Coast Guard) as much as the other branches.

So the 40% you quote, probably people that move their money offshore. CEO's, people playing the market, web entrepreneurs, parents--tax payed, net gain in return. In fact, parents are probably a large percentage of that.

Our growth is stagnant also. The housing burst has pretty much erased any gains we've made since the dot-com burst.

European military power has decreased because they don't really need a military as much as the world police. They put more into their diplomacy and sanctions than we do.

And the U.S can do this why?
#91REDACTED, Posted: Oct 17 2008 at 9:19 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Denham. How do you suggest the top 20% pay no taxes? The only people who pay no taxes are in the lowest tax brackets. Those people are going to be GIVEN a "tax cut" according to Obama from the top 5%. It is not a "tax cut" if they pay no taxes in the first place, it is directly taking and giving, Socialism.

No, I pay $1900 in tax every year.

About $1850 comes out of my paycheck directly, and the other $50 I have to pull out of a paycheck later on.

I'd love to see it drop to $1300 a year with the same $50 coming out in late April, because that means an extra $21 every two weeks that I can fritter away on things like food, electricity, rent, or my state taxes.

EDIT: Also, look up "tax shelters", you ignoramus.

They pay no taxes as it is, now Obama wants to take from the top 5% by increasing taxes and giving that money for free, for just breathing to that 40% who pay no taxes.

Are you being nitpicky and not counting the people who get all of their taxes (and then some) back as "people who pay no taxes"?

If you are, then it's not 40% - it's more like the 4% who make so little per year that they aren't required to have any taxes withheld, plus the ~20% of the populace that isn't working, like children.

By the way, the whole "People who don't work or pay taxes are still getting a tax cut!!" is a talking point created by Republicans who are distorting Obama's tax policy.
Obama's Tax Policy wrote:
Cut taxes for 95 percent of workers and their families with a tax cut of $500 for workers or $1,000 for working couples.
[...]
Middle class families will see their taxes cut – and no family making less than $250,000 will see their taxes increase. The typical middle class family will receive well over $1,000 in tax relief under the Obama plan, and will pay tax rates that are 20% lower than they faced under President Reagan. According to the Tax Policy Center, the Obama plan provides three times as much tax relief for middle class families as the McCain plan.
