I recently discovered that cancelled has multiple allowable spellings. I now like this word immensly because it doubles the slim chance that I might inadvertantly spell it correctly. But the question here is, which spelling is more correct, if any?

There is currently a debate in the office about this. Battle lines have been drawn, and the strategic rubber band stockpiles of both sides have been deployed, leaving us mere minutes away from total office stinging twangy armageddon unless this can be resolved.

Help me Asylum Wan Kenoibi, you're my only hope!

vote added!
It is spelled:
Cancelled :67 (74.4%)
Canceled :23 (25.6%)
Total:90

I think it needs a vote. Either that or you can ask Tare.

I vote 'cancelled' as it follows the rules (and I like the letter "L").

If I recall correctly, "canceled" is the preferred spelling in US English. It might be different in places where they still worship Queen Liz or whatever.

"Cancelled" looks more right to me, but Firefox says its "canceled."

It's like traveled, which pisses me off every time I type it wrong. Stupid arbitrary English rules.

I prefer the double-L, as it goes along with the short vowel sound of the "e."

Then I can see where the confusion lie. Try it with a bactrian camel rather then a dromedary (it's all in the humps).

Looks like 'cancelled' is the British spelling. Firefox haets Brits.

It's "cancelled".

Shrivel, shrivelled, label, labelled, drivel, drivelled, ok, the last one isn't real, but you get the idea.

I think it's UK/US thing though, because my Firefox agrees with me.

Bagelled? Bagel should totally be a verb.

I use "cancelled" when I type it out, and I don't care what everyone else says.

Having only one "l" looks incomplete and empty.

I spell it canceled. The "ll" doesn't look right to me. At least it is not as bad as catchup and katchup.

Yeah the two spellings of that word are 'ketchup' and 'catsup.'

That's the beauty of the English language. You can make anything a verb or an adjective or almost any other part of speech if you want to. Just because it's not in the dictionary, doesn't mean it's not a word.

Bagelled sounds kinda like a way of folding to me. It would be fun to go bagelling down the road. Or maybe, "We bagelled his ***". Let your mind ponder on that phrase for awhile.
