I'm predicting something of a yawner. Despite the "town hall" label to the format, the debate will be strictly guided. The rules include:

Smiley: schooled Ninety-second answers, followed by two-minute discussion for each question. Two-minute closing statements.

Smiley: schooled Questions will come from among 100 to 150 uncommitted likely voters in the audience and one-third from written questions submitted online. All will be screened by moderator Tom Brokaw.

Smiley: schooled The in-studio questioner must not deviate from his or her question and cannot ask a follow-up question. Their microphones will be turned off after they ask their questions.

Smiley: schooled The moderator cannot ask a follow-up.

Smiley: schooled The camera cannot show the reaction of the questioner.

Smiley: schooled Candidates may not directly address one another.

Smiley: schooled Candidates may not leave their "box" on the stage to approach the audience of the other candidate.

Obama probably benefits from the expectations bar here since everyone talks about how McCain's favored format is the town hall. Between the expectations game and this not being a real town hall but rather a stump speech giving session disguised as a town hall, I'm guessing Obama at least holds his own tonight or, more likely, comes out ahead.

They're closing streets down already. I'm glad our offices aren't close to Belmont anymore, it would be hell.

Wasn't this also kinda how the vice pres debates were supposed to go? Maybe Brokaw will shake it up a little.

This is a shining example of a Varus post.

Not only completely ignoring what is going on in the thread, but also trying to show off his meager accomplishments.

Hey Joph, where did you find the roooooles? I can't seem to track them down in less than 45 seconds and I'm like that.

That's an excellent question, Paul. May I call you Paul? No one wants that question answered more than the Maverick and I do. Joe Six Pack wants an answer to that question, and that's his right as an American.

Obama would keep you from knowing the answer to that question, Paul. You betcha he would, doggone it. Ask any soccer dad or hockey mom out there in small towns all over America and they'll tell you, they're scared of not knowing, of being kept in the dark. They're afraid of the dark, Paul. And you should be afraid of the dark too.

Obama is pretty dark, dunno if you've noticed that.

Well thanks for getting back to me with that concise and extremely clear answer, Sarah.

And, if you dont mind, while you're on the tellingbone an'all, and as it was you who said that it was time to take the gloves off, perhaps you wouldnt mind answering another question or two that have been bothering me ever since you sashayed into the limelight from total obscurity....

Pastor Muthee. Now you will remember him from a couple of years ago (he actually 'laid hands' on you and you cited his 'bold' approach as one of the reasons you strove to become governer). In other words he was a prime influence on your choice of career path....

Now you have accused Mr Obama (the black dude) of consorting with terrorists. Are you aware of Mr Muthees history?? Apparently he became famous for being a witchfinder!! He identified using 'prayer' to identify a woman in a village in Kenya who in his opinion was causing car crashes! According to accounts of the witch-hunt circulated on evangelical websites, after Mutheee spoke out against Mama Jane (the witch) many villagers demanded she be stoned.

Now i dont know about you, but rounding up a posse of 200 angry villagers and going around to someones house and threatening them with stoning isn't the sort of thing that should be tolerated anywhere outside of Knoxville Tennesee. How do you see your connection with the good Reverand as any less (or more) of a reason to find your choice of aquaintances somewhat questionable to anyone whose world view was formed after the early middle ages?

And what has happened to the subject of your connections and particularly your husbands connections with Alaskan Independence Party, wich as you well know was founded by Joe Vogler who wanted Alaska to secede from the United States?

A couple of notable quotes from Mr Vogler being..

"The fires of hell are frozen glaciers compared to my hatred for the American government, and I won't be buried under their damn flag."

And

"I'm an Alaskan, not an American. I've got no use for America or her damned institutions."

Doggone it Mrs Palin! There you are critiscizing Obama for associating with Ayers, who was once a radical, but ended up working with the poverty stricken, and yet there you and your husband are, consorting with an organisation that wants (and still wants) independance from the rest of the US!!

Now I know you're a bit of a thicky, and you are probably realising just about now that you are in waaaay over your head, but do you not think that before you start slagging off other peoples associations, in the hope of diverting the voters attention away from 'real' stuff, you maybe ought to spend a moment or two contemplating the shitstorm that is about to descend on that muddled head of yours?

After all, who gives two ***** what McCain thinks or does? He's dead-man-walking. You, Sarah Palin are the one up for election here. You are the one who needs to be laid bare for the world to see.

And I would suggest, that once that happens, the only people who still think you are a 'reasonable' human being, are the fanatical Pubbies who would vote for Rosemary West if it would keep a Democrat (any Democrat, especially a black one FFS!) out of the Whitehouse.

Palin. You are one scary piece of work.

"Town Hall Meeting" - what a fraud. Not that the rest of the dance isn't a fraud as well, but this charade is particularly silly.

Oh, you betcha I do, demongone it. This campaign trail is hard on the ol' love life, if you take my meaning. *wink*

Todd, don't worry about Todd. A girl has to make do with what's out there in Alaska. You know what we say, the odds are good but the goods are odd. *wink*

Joph kinda paraphrased it though. The article he linked said "Candidates cannot ask each other direct questions". So presumably, they can respond to what their opponent said and counter argue all they want. They just can't actually ask a question of their opponent.

This style of debate is very different than what we saw last week (or even at the last presidential debate). It's more of a "dueling discussion" approach. I assume that the prohibition against asking questions of eachother (and follow up questions) is that the format is designed to allow each candidate to simply talk about the topic that was raised. It's supposed to simulate each candidate having their own town hall meeting (where you wouldn't have an opponent questioning you). It's a more free flowing format. The candidate gets to say whatever he wants in response to the question and the audience can judge whether they liked the responses over all.

McCain has an advantage overall in this format. It's not pre-scripted, and the candidate needs to be able to emote with a small close group. Obama tends to do better with more distance between himself and the audience, and a teleprompter. Not that I think either one will fail at the format, but McCain has more experience with this environment and tends to come off more congenial to small groups.

On the flip side, as the article correctly pointed out, McCain's campaign is going on the offensive right now, and it's tricky to pull that off in this format. This format favors the guy who can say what he'd do or what he's done that's "good" in the eyes of the people watching. Positive messages tend to work better than negative. That's going to favor Obama purely because he's ahead in the polls right now and doesn't feel he needs to "attack" McCain as much as just stay cool and not tip over the apple cart.

I think it'll be an interesting debate. I really do want to see how McCain manages to keep on message regarding Obama. If he does it correctly, he could gain some ground. If he flubs it, he could dig himself a hole. Obama really doesn't have to do anything but show up and not suck too much, so it's really up to McCain in terms of result.

See. Theres the problem.

If I was a voting/thinking American, I wouldn't care so much about McCains message about Obama, but more about McCains message as to what he intends to do with what little time he has left on this planet, and once he has shuffled off this mortal coil, why he thinks that Palin would make a valid replacement.

Of course thats not what its about anymore ever since it was turned into an MTV reality show.

Maybe for the first 45 minutes...it's been all downhill for the last half so far...

McCain did do better than last time, Obama still won.

However, for two candidates who hammered out preconditions ahead of time, neither could stick to the rules that they agreed too.

It annoyed me more than Brokaw.
