I posted this in the tech forum too, but no one goes there much.

Subject says it. I'm going to get another video card and I was wondering what everyone's opinion is on whether or not a fan is needed. The last 2 cards I've had have had fans. One still works, although the fan sputters, stops and starts, when it spins. The other card, the fan completely stopped working, so now the card overheats.

Should I stick with the fans, or do the cards with heat-sinks work just as well?

Depends.

Are you getting a big fancy 3D gaming card? If so those definately need fans and almost always come with them attached. If you just need to replace a standard VGA adaptor then it may not be necessary...but most will still come with one anyways.

If it needs a fan it'll have a fan, just get what you want for performance (assuming your power supply and case cooling can handle it). The really good cards will all have fans as they generate too much heat.

I kind of figured that, and it seems like most cards have a fan on them now anyway. I guess I just got 2 lemons, haha.

No, not getting a big super-card, just a nice mid-range one for my MMOs.

Yeah, whatever you buy for that will have a fan on it. The only fan-less cards I've seen in the past ten years were low-end 128mb value jobbers.

Sounds like the bearings burned out on yours. How old were/are they, and do you have dust issues?

The last one was just 7 mos. old. I was going to return it to Newegg, but after checking their site, they don't have the card anymore. I guess I can call and see if I can't still get some kind of deal though.

And yeah, the inside of my case gets dusty, but I try to clean it out often. I use the canned air, and even take the components out of the case so I can get everything sprayed out. I guess I just let it go too long this last time, maybe.

I have an Nvidia 8500gt, no fan. Works great and cost me $50.00 new a year ago. It gets a little rough on Assassin's Creed but for MMOs it works great.

fans work. infact the latest radeon hd cards have both a fan and heat sink.

Eh, money's tight around here. It'll be a while before I can afford a $300 vid card, haha.
