I can't leave Wal-Mart without raiding the $5 movie bin. I almost always find something worth picking up. I have a few hundred movies by now.
We did away with actual DVD and CD plastic cases years ago and replaced them with giant leather three ring binders which zipper shut around the (normally) open seam (so that ones that get loose don't fall out). Of course we're totally old fashion: modern people likely have all music ripped onto DVDs. /shrug.
Actually, we sort of have a similar issue, except that it is with books. I'd like to have a couple more bookcases for the dead tree versions of information. She'd rather not. To me, it is odd to have a house with so few books. We have tons of kid books but we don't have an atlas or dictionary on an accessible shelf. Sure, we've got like four working laptops which we can use anywhere but it's not the same.
Back to movies, the only movies we watch are for the toddler. We copy and edit out everything but the movie and we trim some fighting out. Thus I can slap one in the DVD player in the car and the movie actually just starts. No menu, etc. So nice. I wouldn't mind except that virtually every movie requires different button presses to get it started and typically I'm driving and using the remote at the same time. Ya, not so safe.

Meh. We're going to add onto the house we bought anyways. Something about if babies come, we need the room to put them somewhere.
Jonwin and I don't go out of our way to buy DvD's, since I have 2 daughter's that have large collections and willing to lead us any we may want to watch.
Our problem is that one can never have enough bookshelves. I grew up in a family where each of us were given books for Xmas. My ex and I had over 40 boxes of books when he got out of the navy. Jonwin's mom sends over so many books every few months of which most get donated to local thrift store. Still the piles of books still keep growing.
Soon our collection of signed books, will need their own bookcase.

wow i hope my wife never finds this thread....i have plans for a plethora of dvd's and books to be in the house, being in the military i completely agree with keeping dvd's in the original case. too many times ive had to move around with dvd's cd's games etc. in binders and they get ruined, so i have become quite **** and refuse to use binders if at all possible....but thats just me

You're every military guy. You'll keep the original boxes for everything. Hubby did the same thing. And now that he's retired and we bought our house, I'm putting my foot down.

Pee around the edges of your yard for protection against wild animals and savages. Pee around the bases of trees, shrubs and on flower beds and stuff. Pee's a good fertilizer (try to refrain from peeing on the veggie garden once things start sprouting).

i never used to do it at all actually, i kept binders for everything, im tired of having to buy new dvd's and games though, i will agree with the ocd of being organized with cases(im sure ill have them in some order like comedy horror etc.) as a result of the military
It makes me laugh that this thread is this long and still about DVD storage.
What's bred in the bone will not out of the flesh.

I did, however, collect about 3/5 of the whole series of Babylon 5 on commercially released video tape, and then have to scrap that and recollect it on DVD. Of course, it's not only better quality but much more compact on DVD, but at least some of that was due to the stupid-*** Warner Bros. released the videos, which basically left you (if you bought them all) with all of first and fifth seasons, and most of fourth and some of second season. At that point, they stopped releasing the series on video altogether (around the time DVD technology came out--read: when players were still way too damn expensive) so you wound up with a great big fucking void right in the middle of the series--which was, incidentally, the best part of the series.

I think it's a joke that we have to re-purchase our films/music collections every 5-10 years for every new format that comes out. There should be a trading schemes whereby if you purchased Star Wars on VHS, you should get the DVD/Blue-Ray/HD/wmv/3D version for the price it cost to manufacture the medium. So, 0.5$ or something. Same for music.
I have about 200 DVDs, and pretty soon they'll be as useful as a VHS tape. Ah, the joys of consumerism.
