Hubby and I have been purging, decluttering and organizing our home and we have come to an issue that he and I cannot agree upon. It's his DVD collection. We have over 1000 movies and I want to get rid of at least half of it.

Hubby wants to keep every DVD in its original case, which is taking up a lot of space in our house. I want to get rid of the cases and put them in albums/holders to consolidate the space.

Does anyone else have suggestions or can someone explain why you would keep this movie, this movie and countless others like those?

Edit: Linking skillz sux.

I collect movies too. Actually I think putting them into some kind of case is a great idea, one I hadn't thought of.

I think the allure of having them all on a shelf in cases for you to see is that it kinda gives visitors to your house a peek into your cultural tastes (assuming they're arranged in a fairly orderly fashion, not strewn about). For example, I pride myself on having amassed quite the collection of hard-to-find '80s comedies. Nothing makes me happier than hearing "Oh my god, I haven't seen that movie in so long, I love that movie!"

No. But I'm wondering if you knew about this before you married him Smiley: dubious

Every time I'm at someone's house like that, I'm left wondering "Why do I know a person who paid money to own a copy of Gremlins 2?"

Not that it will hold 1000, but you can keep the "cool" factor for him and get rid some of the space issue for you by investing in something like this. He can keep the cases in storage in the attic or whatever.

I wonder if he realizes that he has anywhere from $10,000 to $30,000 in plastic that I could wipe out with a magnet.

Aren't DVDs burned into the center of the disc with a laser? And as such, not affected by magnetic fields?

Thanks for letting me know. I should probably cancel that flight to SD now then.

Ugly frequently confuses DVDs and Betamax.

I've looked into that and seriously am contemplating it, especially if I can show him that we can get rid of half of the premium cable channels if we go this route. We do not need HBO, Showtime, Cinemax, Encore and Starz.

You could also, and I don't know if you'd *want* to go this route due to price involved, but you COULD convince him that if he sells all of them, he'd have enough to start working on his blu-ray collection.

Ray's **** enough that for one movie, he will get the regular cut DVD, then the Director's cut DVD, then the Extended Version/Collector's Edition DVD. Oh, and because we do have PS3 and the 360, we have Blu-Ray and HD-DVD players. So.......he has gotten the same movie on regular DVD, then Blue-Ray then HD-DVD to compare.

Yeah... the rule should be if you replace an old version with a new version...you get to watch it one more time for the contrast and then pick which one you like better to keep.

It seems like we have people here that are single handedly keeping the DVD industry alive.

(Like, our DVD collection is in an upright cardboard box, the same one we carted them into this apartment inside, arranged in two rows.

On the other hand, our bootleg Japanese anime collection is filed into a dozen CD albums.)

Ikea has some nice DVD storage boxes:

I'm going to try to convince hubby after we purge and clean up his DVD collection, to try to get rid of the cases and store the DVDs in those CD albums. I'm figuring we can whittle his DVD collection down to less than 400 (and I would prefer no more than 250), use the albums, and those albums will only take up a shelf in the bookcase.

I am foretelling me laying out this proposal during a sex session to get him to agree.

My wife and I have gone through the same issue in the same roles. She fills up CD binders left and right; I have stacks of plastic cases.

We made a compromise: Sort the movies between binders (cartoons; movies; TV shows; hers, mine) and then save the "special" cases in a box (sans disks). I saved my aluminum T2 case and tin Evil Dead 2 boxes and she has her Friends Complete Series box, among others.

We also found a DVD cataloging program: Eric's Movie Database

I just think that the Gremlins' version of New York, New York was funny as hell. =D

I know I'm kind of OCD about it, but I can't stand to have any of my movies, games, or music CDs out of their cases. I think it's because even the nice brand name CD albums have ruined old CDs and PS1 games on me. Right now, I just have a bookcase dedicated to digital media that's deep enough for two rows of cases. And the cases make it much easier to figure out which movie I want to watch.

I'm going to watch Gremlins 1&2 this weekend. Thanks for the recommendation Joph :)

She still resents me every time I want to watch one of my movies. Especially Paul Newman movies.

Last week she told me "You can pick any movie you want to watch and I won't complain" then in the same breath forced me to watch The Little Mermaid 2: Ariel's Beginning. That one was not particularly high on my list..

Be glad you don't have my DVD collection. Spread throughout three 320 disc cases and always growing--netflix--I have not yet attempted to tame it or use alphabetical order out of the fear of an hour spent each time I add a movie with the title 'A.' I was thinking about buying clear jewel cases but the cheapest I was able to discover ran about 28.99 with shipping for 200. Just don't have any money right now except for the necessities.

I think I have like...oh, maybe 30 DVDs. I usually only buy them if they're some special boxed set or something...like I have the LOTR extended version set, and the Hellsing boxed set...and occasionally I buy collectors versions of nostalgic classics like The Last Unicorn. Mostly though, I can't justify the expense.
