I get a new cell phone next month if I renew my 2 year contract with Verizon (which I will, it's been great). I don't really know much about cell phones, except that I want one that's bluetooth compatible since my current one isn't...and I'd like a headset for the car. My current phone is a Samsung, and it's been fine. Are there brands I should stay away from or that are particularly better than others? It looks like my options will be another Samsung, a Motorola, a "Verizon Smartphone" and a few others that I probably won't go for because they'd cost money, haha.

Any suggestions are appreciated!

I have the best cell phone deal ever.

Verizon prepaid.

I bought my phone. I have no contract. If I want a new phone, I go buy it. Monthly cost? $15.

My phone cost me $129.95 plus tax, which was roughly $139. Over the course of two years, with no contract, I paid $360.

Had I gotten a free phone with the $40 a month minimum contract, I would have paid $960 total, which is $461 more than I actually paid.

AND I got the exact phone I wanted, to boot. And since I have Verizon Get It Now, whenever I have extra prepaid cash (my balance right now is around $50), I can go ahead and buy new games and stuff. All my money rolls over every month, so I don't have to worry about running out of weekend minutes or anything like that. I only paid for the days I use the phone for a call (dollar a day access fee); otherwise it's 10 cents a text.

Why did I go this route? Besides being cheaper, I used to work for a cell phone insurance company. I am never, ever, ever getting a cell phone contract. Ever.

hmmm, interesting. I may have to ponder this. The dollar a day access fee is only applied for voice calls, but not when you use text messaging? I'm sure I could tell people not to call me, haha.

I got a $4 or $5 add on to my contract for so many text messages when the price per text message went up to a quarter per from 10 cents per...you still get them at 10 cents each with the prepaid set up?

I found the page explaining it, haha, nevermind the questions!

The only thing that bugs me is the expiration period. I wish it was 3 months or something instead of 30 days.

Verizon just started offering a Month to month plan.

You buy what ever phone you want at retail cost, pick the calling plan you want and your set. No contract, to termination fee for leaving.

As long as your not under a contract its a option.

Edited to add:

New every 2 would NOT be a option with this plan.

Would I be able to use my current phone with the prepay plan or are there specific phones for that or what? I mean, when my contract expires next month, can I just call up and set up the prepay thing and go from there?

Thanks for all the help guys, I never would have thought of that!

You should be able to use you existing phone on the pay as you go plan as so long as you have a Tri mode or all digital phone.

Keep in mind depending on the level of plan you select with the Inpluse it could end up costing ( if you use the phone daily ) on the low end $30.69 to 92.69 in daily access fees.

If your a lite user its issues as all.

I bought the LG VX8350 a few months back and it is a great little phone. At the time, it was the number one rated phone on Consumer Reports offered by Verizon. It isn't the flashiest phone but it has everything you need. It is capable of music downloads and interent access. Sound and voice quality is great. Also, for only $9.95 you can get VZ Navigator (GPS) which I think is awesome.

ETA: it is bluetooth capable also

Ok experts, review of my analysis to make sure I haven't missed anything please!

Assumptions: I can use my current phone...though maybe I'll get a new one for Christmas or something, so tell me if I'm wrong here.

Cost breakdown of the prepay plan:

Daily access: .99/day (I wouldn't bother going with a higher priced plan because I'm not going to call anyone from my cell after 9pm and the rare occasions when I would use weekend minutes wouldn't add up to $2 extra.

Let's say that I use it every day, but just for INCalling, I'd be at roughly $30 a month.

The most text messages I've ever used in a month is less than 100...so at most, we're talking an additional $10 a month for messages.

Let's even go so far as to say that I make a few mobile to house phone calls and talk for 100 minutes (which would be insane because I just wouldn't call non mobile phones if it cost money without it being an emergency. Everyone I know has a mobile in the network), that would be another $10.

The total would then be $50 a month, with no contract at all...and I'm currently paying $52.50.

Am I missing something?

Your breakdown of the costs of inpulse ( pay as you go ) looks right on.

Let me throw this at you.

For $39.99 on the no contract plan you get 450 minutes, unlimited night and weekend minutes ( non issue for you is I understand your last post )unlimited in network calling and the normal v-mail callerid features. Add the $5 text package if you use them and your under the $50+ you pay now.

Ohh, good thinking...lemme look at the breakdown currently:

Usage: 46.98
Taxes and surcharges: 5.04

So really, I'd need it to be under 46.98 to make it worthwhile...less if I consider that with a package, I can get a new phone....hmmmm...

It's actually the exact same amount I pay now, minus some extended warranty on my phone that I pay $1.99 a month for:

Monthly Access Charges $46.98
Current Calling Plan 09/21 - 10/20: 39.99
Extended Warranty 09/21 - 10/20: 1.99
250 MSG Camera $5 09/21 - 10/20: 5.00

So it would cost the same as I'm paying now...but I could cancel at any time, but I wont' get a new phone...right? I'm not sure that would be any good since I want a new phone soonish and I'm not planning on getting rid of phone service in the next couple of years, haha.

Again: unless I'm missing something.

Correct.

Guess it comes down to the new phone and how importand and how soon you want one.

I think I might go with the prepay thing. Seems safest and I have more control over what I'm spending.

I kind of skimmed this thread, but I also use pre-paid service. I have AT&T, though, the Go Phone. Pretty much the same deal that Verizon has, daily $1 access fee, 10¢/min for calls, free to any other AT&T customer, etc. I spend $15-25 per month, depending on how much I use it (I don't use it much) and I just got a refurb camera phone that has lots of bells and whistles on it for $20.

Two reasons I do prepaid - 1. I don't use the phone enough to justify even a $40/mo bill and 2. I hate being locked into a contract.

Slight hijack.
I dont own a cell phone, have no real need for one except for the occasional day tour when I am waiting on the bus to arrive and they are late. For those days I just usually borrow elne's cell.
Is there any type of service i can get that will cost under $10 a month?

I'd love one too. I'm always either at work or at home, in both cases by a phone, or I really don't want to be called 99% of the time. It's that last 1%.

So I have one and we pay maybe $10/month for it and my wife's family is on the plan and they love it since I guess somehow my $10/month gets "us" more total minuets to use per month.

I'd pay $1/minute to use the thing if I had no other fees. Really I just want it for emergencies. I only consented to getting one at all since my wife was pregnant the first time. Now it's been like 3 years and $360 seems a lot for a phone I hardly ever use. /shurg

There are family share plans that would run you $5 a month. You and Elne would share minutes. Catch is Her plan might go up in cost.
