If you die from a cause directly associated with smoking, it is a successful suicide attempt. So lung cancer, oral cancer, emphyzema, etc. Hope you enjoy an eternity of devil servitude.
What if you drink wine in accordance with your religion and it eventually leads to liver failure? Does that count? Or if you accidentally starve yourself to death while fasting? Technically that's suicide, i'nnit?

This thread makes me glad I'm an atheist.

What sect are you thinking of that requires you to drink so much wine that it impacts your health? Smiley: laugh

It was the hourly Communion that did 'em in.

Whichever has the best conversion rate from ounces to litres.

Stop trying to muddle up my argument with things like facts or common sense, Joph!

It is the opinion of this poster that the gift of tongues is no longer given. My proof of that is that the languages spoken when speaking in tongues are either nonsense syllables or are supposedly to ancient, and thus dead languages. It does not make sense for the Holy Spirit to give gifts that no longer serve their original purpose, but rather draw attention to the speaker.

I'd argue the gifts of faith healing and prophecy are also no longer given, but I suspect some would take issue with that.

It's been a while since I had a bible class, but don't most mainstream Christian churches teach that there were no more prophets after John ate the funny mushrooms and came up with Revelations (hence it being the last book in the Bible, despite there being lots of other texts written afterward)?

(Oddly enough, the last bible class I took was for uni credit. The Bible in the Black Church. Good class, although pretty awkward for 30 white-as-bread north Georgia kids. That's why when the Wright stuff came out, I was offended for maybe all of five seconds before I remembered that I'd heard almost identical stuff before. Mostly it was hermeneutics and apologists and such, though.)

American Pentacostalism has had a major impact on modern Christianity in that many beliefs they subscribe to aren't very old, by traditional standards or mainstream doctrine. They adhere to a more... self driven theology, wherein the individual believer determines what is Biblical or not. Very ruggedly individualistically American, yes?

It comes from a reaction to European traditions where the church leaders set doctrine and expected the lay people to follow it. In the absence of accessable seminaries or church colleges many itinerate preachers/evangelists made up their own doctrine as they went along. Thus Pentacostalism became entrenched in American religion. Eventually, it spread across the sea, particularly with it's emphasis on mission work.

That's what the Russian Czar said, way back when!

As for unsuccessful slow suicide: You still go to hell, because you had the INTENTION. Unless you truley-ruley repented in your heart and love Jesus whole-heartedly and ask him to deliver you from your prior sins, and will never-ever do it again.

That means you quit smoking and asked for forgiveness.

Well, technically you'd be hell-bound only if you didn't subsequently repent - an option not available to a successful suicide.

Everytime I see this thread, I can't help but be amazed at the coolness of the word "Poligion". It really captures the zeitgeist.

And while "Relitics" might be a bit more accurate, it just doesn't have the same ring to it.
