This article says pretty much what I've been thinking about Palin's daughter.

One, it's pretty awful for an unmarried teenager to be pregnant and have everyone in the world know it. I hear Jamie Lynn Spears sent her a baby present, which is kind of cool considering how she was roasted in the media.

Two, it's a great opportunity for parents to talk to their kids, and not just their daughters. Boys need to be educated and reminded of potential consequences as well.

Finally, it reminds me of a friend of a friend of mine who has four teen and pre-teen daughters. She is an amazingly empowering mother for her girls. She tells them all the time that the decision to have sex is theirs, and to keep it that way. She doesn't puSSyfoot around with "if you have sex before marriage"; she's all, "let's face it, you're probably gonna, so here's what you need to know and here's my doctor's phone number." Her husband leaves the room when she gets started, haha. On the other hand her daughters are great people.

I gave the sex talk to my 7 year old boy a few months ago. It was his birthday if I remember correctly.

Man, what kind of sex do teenagers get up to these days? Smiley: frown

I feel like I'm missing out

Er, I'm pretty sure she gives them her gynecologist's number, not the trauma surgeon.

In one of my classes in high school . . . I think it was anatomy, during the human reproduction section, we had to take care of a bag of sugar for six weeks. We had to keep it in a basket with us at all times, "feed" it and change its "diaper" and mark down the time we fed it/changed it on a sheet, and at the end of the six weeks present it intact to our teacher, with no bruises or tears. Each bag was signed by her so she'd know if we dropped it and tried to replace it. And if we left our bag of sugar behind in a classroom and another teacher found it, we lost 5 points off the project final grade. Leave it behind too many times and you just flunked Basic Parenthood 101. (Like all those stories of people leaving the baby in the SUV by accident and coming back to find it dead. Morons.)

I think that project ought to be done sooner, in 8th grade or 9th grade. It won't prevent kids from being sexually active, but it sure takes the glamour out of having a baby. Teens don't realize how much work it is. There are teenage girls that think it's going to be all fun and games and they'll have someone to love them unconditionally and vice versa, and it's not like that at all. They try to get pregnant. Those aren't accidents, they're intentional because we've glamorized teen motherhood too much.

Thom never got circumsized; can I just get him a vasectomy now instead?
