How much publicity can you buy for £20K ($40K)? Usually not much at all. A very brief one-off regional TV commercial would cost more.

So some bright-spark at Electronic Arts managed to attain prime-time coverage on most UK-Wide TV & Radio all day by giving away Free Petrol/Gasoline Smiley: lol

Chaos at £20,000 petrol giveaway

A stunt in which £20,000 of petrol was given away in north London to promote a computer game has been criticised as "irresponsible and dangerous".

Traffic was gridlocked outside the Last Stop garage in Finsbury Park as drivers queued for £40-worth of free fuel each.

The promotion began at 0630 BST and ended about four hours later.

Lynne Featherstone, MP for Hornsey and Wood Green, said: "Whilst a lucky few might have got free petrol, hundreds of residents have faced misery".

The Liberal Democrat said: "Trying to recreate Venezuelan-style fuel riots on the streets of London is completely irresponsible and downright dangerous.

"Hundreds of local residents have faced misery on their daily journeys this morning.

Bringing Norf Land'n to a standstill's fine by me, and pissed off suburban whiney middle-class residents are just a bonus.
It would be hard for me to justify wasting an hour queueing for $80 worth of gas, but for folks on a low income, I'd say it was an awesome deal.

Hats off to EA's Marketing team.

This would have been a good promotion for Tropico.

Their marketing team is pulling some crazy stunts lately. Did you hear about the tiger walking on water glitch?

I've seen that video before too, I thought it was an excellent example of spinning something negative into something that will (likely) bring somewhat of a larger following. I found it quite clever.

Ohh, Tropico! I thought I read Orangina, you know that French juice company.

Speaking of, a commercial of theirs that has gained internet popularity because of it's connection to furries is up for views. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v3RJugOtP40&feature=related

On topic, great idea on EA's part, despite it's resulting chaos.

Either they're getting poorer, advertising more for more profit, or just want more money than they already have. But then again, who doesn't?

If you're referring to the tiger walks on water video, I thought it was incredibly clever and ballsy. I mean.. portraying Tiger Woods with jesus-like traits just to sell a video game? The backlash could have been overwhelming. Instead, fans and would-be fans now have something to look at and say "Hey, they're not complete ********* about it - kinda cool."

Best spin I've ever seen, honestly.

As opposed to the speed that a wheelchair-bound emphasaemic can attain up a sand-dune?

I used to drive along the Norf Circular to work at the North Mid. Hospital. It was a standstill 13 years ago!

They did the same thing in Las Angeles. I went looking for a news story about the horrors it caused, but was unable to find one. I'm assuming things went a bit smoother there.
