Well, technically, *we're* the ones who are overpopulated. We're encroaching on their territory. In that light, I'm all for ultralight, superfast cars that explode into fiery death if a deer happens to be standing on the side of a highway.
The deer are very over populated. At least here in Michigan. And there is lots of wooded area in western michigan.
In the last few years, their population density and deer baiting piles have lead to an increase in bovine tuberculosis. This lead to a dramatic decrease in the allowed size of deer bait piles to try and limit the deer all coming to one point and spreading the disease
And these past few months, there was a local case of what they called "chronic wasting disease" which has caused a large scare, and the DNR has issued a no bait pile rule.
So it's not just us encroaching on them. They are just breeding like crazy, especially in the absense of any natural predators (Mostly our fault, no more wolves, etc.) They have been issueing a lot of Doe permits in the past years to try and control the population.
