Hoping to dispel long-running concerns that autism is linked to the measles-mumps-rubella vaccine (MMR), researchers now say a new study shows the childhood vaccine does not raise that risk.

"We are certain that there's no link between autism and the MMR," Dr. W. Ian Lipkin, director of the Mailman School of Public Health Center for Infection and Immunity at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, said at a Wednesday teleconference.

"We found no evidence that the [gastrointestinal] pathology consistently preceded autism, and we also found that the MMR didn't consistently precede either autism or GI pathology," he added.

Not that I'm worried this will lead to the suckers immunizing their kids. On a related note, 90% of Measles cases last year...unimmunized kids.

This is shocking and unexpected, oh wait it isn't.

The whole "vaccine causes autism" thing has seemed to go on just about as long as the "eggs are good for you - no wait, they're bad for you - hold on, they're good - wait, don't eat those eggs just yet" thing has.

Not saying that the institution doing the study hates/loves autism, but it's important to remember that there will almost always be some form of bias within a study, whether intentional or not. Ignoring certain factors over others can constitute that.

There have only been 2 significant claims about links between MMR & Autism/Bowel disease.

1 was Andrew Wakefield, a discredited British medic (currently under investigation for malpractice by the General Medical Council for a range of unprofessional / dodgy activities.) His original "research" which claimed a link has been almost* universally dismissed as failing the most basic standards of research ethics, research methodology and basic mathematics. It only included 12 children Smiley: dubious

2 A vociferous group of unfortunate parents desperately looking for something or someone to blame for the tragic affliction of their children. The moronic Wakefield fed their paranoia and single-handedly dropping the immunisation rate from 95% to the low 80s - sadly, below safe levels for herd immunity.

*I have yet to see any original or empirical research that supports any of the delusional git's claims. A few fail to prove or disprove, the vast majority show Wakefield's publication to be appalling nonsense.

No, it's important to remember that the existence of two opposing opinions does not make them equal. There is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to indicate MMR is related in any way to Autism. The idea that big pharama is commissioning studies and covering things up to maintain the $12 in profit they make from vaccines, instead of reaping the billions they'd generate from just creating a new vaccine requires some sort of mental disability or psychological defect.

You know, that's a good point. I hadn't thought about that.

Well played.
